Show me your DIY makeup!

Re: Show me your DIY makeup!

  • We're having an outdoor summer wedding in Georgia.  It's likely to be quite hot out.  Anyone have any good tips on what sort of foundation to use to keep from makeup sweating off?

    • I am getting married in May and I am doing my own makeup.  I've been watching alot of the YouTube videos for ideas and I've picked up some great tips and pointers.  I really like Kandee Johnson, Pixiwoo, Emilynoel83, and Letz Makeup.

I've decided on following the Letz Makeup tutorial Bridal Neutral Makeup look for the eyes.  Eye makeup is really where I needed guidance.

Doing my own makeup is also an excuse to buy products I normally wouldn't splurge on at Sephora, lol.
  • Here's my DIY trial:

    • Make Up Forever HD Liquid Foundation - $30
    • Make Up Forever HD Powder - $22
    • Sephora Kohl Eyeliner - $8
    • Urban Decay Primer Potion - on sale, 2 for $19
    • Covergirl Queen Collection eyeshadows in Raisin
    • Maybelline 1-kit Eyeshadow in Golden Halo
    • Covergirl Queen Collection Bronzer in Light Bronze
    • Wet N Wild Color Icon Blush in Pearlescent Pink (similar to NARS Orgasm)
    • L'oreal Infallible 24-hour Eyeshadow in Amber Rush (copper color) and Eternal Sunshine (gold)
    • Avon Lip Shock in Popsicle
    • Ardell individual flare lashes
    • E.L.F. Mist and Set Spray
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. - 1 Corinthians 13:13 Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • I have been looking at differet makeup styles through pictures trying to figure out a simply one I could be able to do on my own. All these suggestions are awesome! I'll have to keep in mind a bunch of these products. Thanks for sharing! :)

It's more about the primer to hold it in place, a foundation/powder that doesn't reflect, and blotting cloths to soak up the oil and sweat when it's springing up! I love my primer (supernatural by philosophy @ sephora,) but it's "peachy" and may not compliment a lot of skin tones... I would definitely recommend a trial run where you take some photos and get active (to duplicate the stressy sweat/oil building conditions of the wedding day) and then take more photos! This way you can assess how your products will hold up, and tweak accordingly. Just make sure you're using a digital camera with flash so you get a realistic idea of the photogenic aspect!

  • FYI ladies, Sephora will do your make-up free. The only "catch" is that you must purchase $50 worth of products. Really, it's a win-win...you can buy any of the products they use so you can touch-up if needed. I'm going to go for my trial the day of my bachelorette party. I would highly recommend going twice...just in case. If possible, bring pictures of yourself or others that have their make-up done in a way you like. It'll make it much easier than trying to explain what you want...especially if make-up isn't an everyday habit for you.
    Anniversary
  • Wow!  You look amazing!!  I also wear glasses and I'm so happy to see that the make up and glasses can look wonderful. :)
  • I'm going to be doing my own makeup for my wedding, since I'm kind of a makeup girl anyway =). I don't have a picture, but I've used these mixture of products before and it greats a really great look (I have oily skin). The products I'll be using are:

    - Too Faced Primed and Poreless (or Urban Decay's Pore Perfecting Primer)
    - MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation
    - Clinique All About Eyes Concealer (will use MAC's Studio Finish Concealer for any blemishes)
    - Mac Select Sheer Pressed Powder
    - NYX Blush and Bronzer
    - Paladio Liquid Eyeliner
    - Revlon Kohl Eyeliner in White (for my waterline and inner corner)
    - BH 120 Eyeshadow Palette
    - Urban Decay All Nighter Long Setting Spray (They have samples at Sephora for a great price!)
    - Revlon's Lip Butter in Peach Parfait
    - Ardell Lashes (w/ Duo Glue)
    - EcoTools and ELF brushes

I tried a trial with a bit of glitter liner on my top last line and I really liked the effect it gave me, so I may use that (I tried the one by NYX). It made my small eyes appear wider.

Sorry for the long list, I just wanted to make sure I didn't leave anything out. =)
  • Oh! & of course Urban Decay Primer Potion (also got a sample at sephora)
  • I did so much research, and practiced like crazy before doing my own wedding makeup.  I was really happy with the way it turned out, and now my makeup looks better on a daily basis.

I used Armani primer, foundation, lipliner, and eyeshadow quad (last summer's limited edition palette), Laura Mercier lipstick and lipgloss, Lancome bronzer, Makeup Forever loose powder (which is amazing for photography), Origins brown shadow for my brows, Maybelline gel eyeliner in black, Maybelline The Falsies waterproof mascara, and Ardel individual fake eyelashes.

Applying the final touches before getting dressed.

With my baby brother, who gave me away.

  • Plan to.

  • I am definitely going to be doing my own makeup on my big day!  (My hair.... well that's another story...)

I am a trained aesthetician and have worked a number of years in cosmetics and skincare- and have worked with photographers in acheiving the most ideal "camera" looks.  Here's a list of 10 techniques and tips brides should be aware of before setting up their DIY vanity table on the big day:

    1.  Quality.  Rimmel, Maybelline, Revlon (most drug-store brands) are not designed for long-lasting coverage - and that is something you really have to count on for your special day!  If the packaging claims the product can stand the test of time- try it out many times beforehand.
    2.  If you are going to have one big splurge purchase- choose the foundation - it will not only bring your overall look together, but it will be sitting on your skin all day (and night) so you will want something breathable, hydrating, and a product that will not oxidize over a couple of hours (ie- grow more orangy in color).  My personal recommendations are Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown, Chanel, and Dior.  Smashbox has some great products that are designed for photographing- but be careful for oxidization.
    3. Skincare is almost as important as your wedding day makeup.  Your natural skin is the palette on which everything else rests.... if your palette is imperfect to begin with- makeup will need to do triple-duty to cover, radiate, AND enhance your features.  Investing in a skincare regime you see results with long before your date is not only favorable- it is very important in acheiving your best "end look"!
    4. Score a primer.  You can often play dumb at a Sephora and ask to try a sample of Smashbox's primer - you won't need more than that for your big day.  A primer acts like a paint primer does on your living room walls- it ensures that the color evenly and fully adheres to the surface- and provides a smooth surface on which to apply your foundation.
    5. Choose your "look" - and then choose what features you want to highlight.  Choose one color family, and stick with it.
    6. Make sure to blend your foundation into your hairline and down below your jawline.
    7. Stay away from mineral makeup- it simply does not photograph well.  I use Mineral Makeup everyday- for work and play, but it creates the illusion of unnatural sheens and light splotches on your skin in photos.
    8.  Apply your makeup AFTER your hair has been styled-chances are water, hairspray, gel, etc will all be applied starting from your hairline back into your do' - and the moisture will seep onto your forehead and cheeks.
    9. Older brides should for the most part avoid shimmery eye shadow- as the shimmer attracts the light to your eyes and places more emphasis on any fine lines on your lids.  Choose matte shades- and coordinate your other product choices to compliment each other.
    10. Do fill in your brows using a "feathering" technique using a shade that matches (or is slightly darker- depending on your "look") than your hair color.

Have fun!  And do your homework ladies!!

I am a professional makeup artist myself and I don't even plan on doing my own makeup on my wedding day. I would DEFINITELY recommend to not leave this to DIY because not only are there very specific measures that an artist takes to make you look flawless in HD but you also want to feel pampered and relaxed on your wedding day...not stressed and frazzled because you can't get your eyeshadow blended the way you want or the eyelashes aren't glued on properly. Not only that but we spend $2500+ on a photographer, $1300+ on a videographer, $2000+ on a dress and $75 on our hair, but can't invest in another $50 for our faces that EVERYONE will be staring at for the whole day? You want to look your absolute BEST and spend the money on everything else so why not spend the extra dime to make sure your face looks it's absolute best!

Just my opinion, but since I do bridal makeup for a living I know that there are cetain techniques and products I use that the average person wouldn't even think of and I've invested thousands of dollars in training and my kit in order to do flawless, waterproof, lasting makeup application that the average person may not be able to.

Avondale, I disagree. First of all, not all of us spend all of that money on those things. Second, some of us are photographed on a regular basis with professional level equipment, and we know what works for us and what doesn't, because we spend our entire lives with our own faces. The makeup that stays on my face and looks good in photographs when I'm in 100+ heat, chasing after horses and lifting heavy equipment, is not going to suddenly melt off and look fugly just because it's my wedding day.

Also, I have never stared at the bride's face the entire wedding. No one does that. It's creepy.

I completely understand a woman wanting to go with a professional for such an important occasion. But I don't think it's right to try to scare women into thinking they don't actually know what looks and works best on their own faces.

By the way, Covergirl Advanced Radiance foundation and Physician's Formula powder rock my socks off.
  • Yeah, I'm with Athsea - I'm not spending $500 on a photographer + videographer or for my hair. Why the fudge would I pay to have someone put some goop on my face? Call me crazy but my fiancé is marrying me because he loves me - not the makeup on my face. I'm okay with what God gave me and will be putting the "finishing details" of makes on my own come this August! PS Stila, Stila, Stila! Great products all around!

  • I really wanted to get my makeup professionally done until I had my trial.... She made me look, to be very blunt, like a whore. I understand that makeup needs to be much heavier that day, which is fine because I generally wear a full face every day. But I looked awful both in pictures I took after and in person. My FI HATED it.

I've been practicing and researching to do it myself. The biggest thing for me is the eyelashes and contouring. I think they just really pull the look together. I'm also going to a local salon to have just the airbrush foundation for $25.

This isn't the place for this post.  This thread is for brides to show off their DIY makeup jobs, either with photos or instructions.  <div>
</div><div>The most important thing is that the bride is happy with her makeup, whether she does it by herself or has it done professionally.  There are plenty people who have DIYed and we extremely happy with the results.  </div><div>
</div><div>Lastly, the prices vary by location.  I had a few MUAs tell me they wouldn't travel to me because my bridal party wasn't big enough.  And the few that were willing were charging $350+.  </div>

  • Im getting married 9/15 but just had my bridal portraits, and did my own makeup.  I went into Sephora a couple of times and was very lost. I am 25 and have never worn foundation, setting powder, lipstick, lipgloss, etc.  And you know what I'm not going to wear it on my wedding day! The Sephora ladies tried to convince me otherwise, and it was confusing, but to hell with it. I HATE lipstick.

    What I wore:
-Estee Lauder Even Skin Tone Illuminator (miracle in a bottle...seriously worth every cent.)
    -Porefessional by Benefit
    -Loreal Concealer
    -NARS Laguna Bronzer
-Hot Mama Blush (looks like NARS orgasm)
-Eye Shadow primer by Urban Decay
-Sephora eyeshadow (golds, gray..I have brown eyes)
    -Stila waterproof liquid eye liner
    -Dior Show waterproof mascara
    -False eye lashes by modlash
    -Burt's Bees orginial chapstick

I just took my portraits in Austin, TX in JULY... so it was nasty and I sweat a lot, BUT my makeup stayed exactly where I put it :)

  • I will be doing my own makeup.  I'm a beauty junkie to begin with.  You really don't need to spend a ton in order to have gorgeous wedding-day makeup.  I completely disagree with kwestartistry - a lot of drugstore products have really stepped up their game lately and are on par with what I buy in department stores and Sephora.  Below are the products I will be using on my wedding day, and after that are some recommendations for good budget beauty products.

    Face:
Monistat to prime.  Sounds weird, but it has most of the same ingredients as those fancy pants primers from Sephora.  It breaks some people out though, so patch-test before you do this on your wedding day!
Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation in Rose Ivory.  This does not have SPF, which is good news for photographs - SPF tends to make you look really washed out when it reacts to the camera flash.
Laura Mercier Secret Concealer in 1
Revlon Colorstay Pressed Powder in Fair
Cargo blush in The Big Easy

    Eyes:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance to prime
Wet 'n' Wild Walking on Eggshells eyeshadow trio - this is a beautiful neutral set that looks great on lighter complexions.  For those who have their doubts about $2.99 eyeshadow, buy a Wet 'n' WIld trio and compare it to your Sephora or department store shadows - it's comparable or better, I guarantee it!
Tarina Tarantino Eye Dream Hyperliner in Tommy Jet
    CoverGirl Clump Crusher mascara

    Lips:
Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Honey - this is a nice muted mauve on me.

Here are some of my favorite drugstore beauty brands and what they do especially well:
Revlon - nail polish, lip products (especially Lip Butters and Colorburst Lipgloss), Colorstay foundation and powder.  This is my all-around favorite drugstore brand!
    Milani - blush, bronzer, eyeshadow
Wet 'n' Wild - eyeshadow, nail polish, eyeliner
Maybelline - lipstick, lip balm, mascara
CoverGirl - the only thing I like by them is Clump Crusher mascara, but it's by far my favorite!

[QUOTE]Some of my favorites.... Bare Minerals-Powder foundation, blush and faux tan bronzer. MAC Paint Pots-Great base! They hold your eye shadow on ALL day. I use Rubenesque MAC Pigment- Nice color, really sticks well to the paint pots and another shadow that last's all day long! I love vanilla. MAC Eye Shadow- Knight Divite is a great smokey color Sephora brushes work well for blending eye shadow. Clinique- Long Last Glosswear SPF 15-This lip gloss isn't sticky and has lasting shine! Any suggestions on mascara and eye liner?

  • I will start off by saying, I'm not a huge makeup wearer.  Mascara and a gloss is normally about as far as I go.  I went to the Bobbi Brown counter of my local department store, and while the products are expensive they completely 'got' the look I was going for and I'm confident that with a bit of practice, the tutorials on the BB website and some patience I will look fresh faced and beautiful on my wedding day.  The products I purchased are:

    Face:
Long-wear even finish foundation in Porcelain
Corrector (for under eye circles) in Light Bisque (I think)
Creamy Concealer kit (for under eye circles) in Porcelain

    Eyes:
Shimmer wash eye shadow in Champagne
    Still need a contour color
Long wear gel eyeliner in Black Mauve shimmer
Still deciding on a mascara (but something waterproof)

    Lips:
    Lip gloss in Watermelon Pink
