Shakespeare Theme

I am sure there have been a couple of these up here and there, I know I have run into a few while lurking around the boards. None the less, I could really use some help with some ideas.

To give you a little background to help you understand Andrew and I a little better:

We met in college and we happen to both be Theatre Majors. I have always had a love of Shakespeare, and he has always been intrigued by him. I have been in over 16 Shakespeare productions and the first time he saw me was on stage in one of these productions. We have been together for over 5 years, and in that time have been living together, moved to Florida together, moved back to Pennsylvania together and have 7 cats, all with Shakespeare Character names, well almost all...

So as you can see Shakespeare is something we both have a passion for.

That being said, we would something a bit different for our Ceremony and Reception. I have noticed a lot of "Midsummer Night's Dream" themes, and while we would like to have some of the concepts of this play in our event. We do not want it to be solely that play. We would like to try and find something that has a couple of them, maybe even picking a few of the romantic plays and using them.

Any help you can offer would be really appreciated in this. Thank you!

Re: Shakespeare Theme

  • StageManager14- those are some great ideas!

An Elizabethean inspired corset dress would be very pretty.

Name each table after a Shakespearean couple:
    Romeo + Juliet
    Titania + Oberon
    Kate + Petruchio
    Hamlet + Ophelia
    Antony + Cleopatra
    Helean + Bertam

Or you could just do the plays themselves.

You could do an Elizabethan inpired menu as well.  "Taming of the Stew"  "HAMlet"  "Julius Ceaser Salad"   if you're feeling more playful.

Arrange the tables banquet style instead of using rounds.

    Dance a traditional Elizabethan dance.

    Good luck with your planning!

  • Wow thank you so much for all the great ideas. I agree that I really think Midsummer Nights Dream is very over done, and it does seem like Prom to me at times. I think its just the whimsical touches from the play that I wanted to find a way to bring to life in on our special day.

I will say that he and I will be trying to stay away from the "costume" outfits, so I like your ideas about the wedding dress with a corset or flowing touches.

I would like to get your thoughts on something I had been thinking about for a while. I wanted to theme the tables off of a select few plays that he and I enjoy, and we wanted to have the table and the center piece represent the elements that embodies that play. Do you think it is too much to do that, since normally the center pieces and such follow only at most two designs?

  • I agree.  You also have to decide if the majority of the guests will "get" the centerpieces and have the background knowledge for the time and effort you took to put the tables together.  If they will, then go for it!  If they won't, I agree with StageManager14 and you may want to find something that's a bit more general.
