Minnesota-Minneapolis and St. Paul

already peeved at church!

The church I wanted just emailed me to say that 02-19 is the ONLY date they are not open for weddings in 2012.  As in, for the entire year, they are going to be closed only on the day I wanted.

When clearly, it does NOT say that on their website on their calendar of events that the chapel is closed on that day.

I am not looking forward to having to either move our date or look for a different church.  If they are closed on certain days they should state it clearly on the website with the rest of the wedding information and not make me jump through hoops to get it out of the people on the other end.

Is there a reason it has to be 2-19? Why not the week before or after?

Do they mean they already have a wedding that day? Or that the church its self will actually be closed to people that day?  I never went to church so I don't know how they work but do they really close ever?

02-19 is our anniverary, so that's why we wanted that day.  I was trying to cut costs by having a winter wedding, and Feb and March are the cheapest months, so I figured we might as well go with our anniversary.

Summer is way too expensive...we both have huge families so we need to cut costs on location instead of cutting guest list.  I don't have any other special dates in Feb/March, and DS's birthday is in December, so we can't do a Christmas wedding.

Maybe New Year's although I would hate to have the wedding overshadow DS's special day.

I also would hate to pick a random date and have our wedding date have zero meaning...I wanted the date to be special.

The coordinator said they are actually closed.  No weddings at all that day, and that day only.  That's why I'm pissed, I thought churches never closed!

It's on a college campus though so apparently there is a "large campus event" that is the reason for the close.

That's super frustrating. But think about it this way, having another date allows for two anniversaries! We get to do a dating annviersary and a wedding anniversary. The date will be special because its your wedding day. We're getting married August 13, that date held no special meaning, but certainly does now!

Gotya.  That sucks!!  I know you really want that day...but what do you prefer...the date or the venue?  If you have your heart set on that church maybe a Friday night wedding the night before?  Friday weddings can save you even more on costs.

That's true, it would be nice to have two dates.  But how do we go about picking another date?

I might prefer the venue...but you're right, we could do a Friday wedding.  That gives us the weekend to hang out with out of town guests...I think I'll have to go to the church and walk around and really make certain it's what we want before picking another date but honestly it is so beautiful (gothic architecture, just gorgeous and interesting doors), I might want it more than the date.

I guess I better hustle on doing that in case they book up and tell me I can't have February at all!

See what days the spaces you want are available. We booked our wedding just under a year out and were amazed how many places we looked at were already booked. I really liked the Lake Calhoun Club and it was booked for every Sat surrounding. We also looked at Landmark and it was completely booked. If you want to do a winter wedding, get in touch with some different locations and see when they're available. We didn't think of this when we picked our date (and it doesn't matter that much) but everyone kept saying our anniversary would occasionally be on Friday the 13th!

This   :)   3/19 meant nothing to us but it does now... it means so much more than our original anniversary.

We chose our venue before we chose our date.  We looked at all venues we were considering, decided on which one we wanted and then picked our wedding date based on what they had available.

Also keep in mind that you still need a reception venue, which if you're keeping your heart set on your date, you may not get the venue that you love most, or that has the most reasonable prices etc if the one you want is booked that day too...

Ditto the Friday suggestion. Off season AND non-Saturday discounts = score!

Great suggestions, you have made me feel a lot better about this!

    Check this out:

Saturday wedding in summer = $1250 rental rate

Sunday wedding in Feb = $850 rental rate!

Even better on the Union Depot venue, their winter rental rate is like $450 after the discount...

    Ditto PP's!

Our date didn't have any significance when we picked it, but it does now!  We're also having a Friday wedding, which we choose to do, because our reception venue was booked for every Saturday, when we looked into it, over a year out!

We didn't pick/book anywhere until I was sure that the church & reception site were open on the same day.

    GL!  = )
