Vows? May or may not be a dumb question

Can you say anything you want if you write your own vows? We were talking about it last night because we want to write them, but his mom thought that we would have to follow certain rules. I didn't think we had to do something special (like have a template that we can personalize) but I'm not sure...

  • Unless you are having a religious ceremony your vows can be whatever you want them to be,

  • I feel like all that really *needs* to happen, is some kind of a commitment and someone official signing the paper. I could be wrong, but I think you are pretty free when doing this.
  • Thank you ladies! It's a religion free ceremony so we should be good to go.

We have certain wording we have to include, because we are doing a self-uniting ceremony in PA, but in other states you should be free to say whatever you want.

  • I'd check with your pastor/JOP/ person marrying you to ensure there's nothing they would be offended by (and perhaps refuse to marry you), or anything you have to include.
  • We are having a part where we write our own.. basically all the lovey dovey stuff we wanna say to make people gag.. and then doing a ring ceremony that will be traditional (the whole I take you Kristin...)

It is your ceremony write what you want! make it yours!

This.  Definitely run it by them and watch how long they are time wise.  People do not need to have vows over about 8 minutes.  That just gets excessive.

Our person is one of our best friends, so I think that he will be cool with anything. We definitely want to keep them short.
