Dr. E, You have a new patient.

I was just getting something out of the oven, and I must've forgotten what I was doing, because I foolishly touched my bare finger to the pan.

Other than ice, is there anything I should do? I don't think I've ever really been burned by something before. This one hurts pretty bad.

It's not go-to-the-doctor-bad, but it's this-hurts-like-a-biitch-bad.

  • Sulfadiazine is great.  In the meantime, we usually don't recommend to patients to use ice because you can get burns from the cold too.  If you use it, put something between your skin and the ice.  Go with cool water instead.  Sorry about your burn- I hate when that happens!  Hope it gets better soon!

Thanks! And I always put something between me and ice when I need to ice something. It just gets too painful if I don't!
  • Did it blister or just hurt?  No ice, just cool water.

  • onion. Cut one up, and put a piece on the burn. Works for me.

It's got a small bump where I burned myself, like it's thinking of getting a blister, but more than anything it just won't stop stinging
  • You really shouldn't use ice. Instead run under cold water or wrap a thin towel around a bag of frozen veggies. The coolness takes away the sting, but ice can cause blistering.

I worked in a bakery a few years back and I grabbed a rack of pies out of the oven without hot pads. I burned the dickens out of my hands and it took days to be even bearable, but I wrapped some ace bandages around my hands wrapped around some frozen veggies at night and I could finally sleep.

Someone else told me mayonnaise worked, but I've never tried that. Sounds gross to me.
