On average, what does a wedding cake cost? Just something simple with like 3 or 4 tiers??? I have no clue what we should look for either as far as picking a bakery. Thanks!!!
It really depends on your area and what you want. For regular butter cream, I found most were $3/slice up to $8/slice. For fondant, it was $8/slice up to $15/slice. I personally hate fondant, so I went with just regular butter cream frosting. I would suggest asking your local board.
Entirely depends on your cake and how expensive your tastes are. My cake, like PP's, was included in the cost of our reception hall. We went with a four-tier, basic wedding cake with buttercream frosting. If you want something fancier, with fresh flowers or fondant, the price is going to go up.
It really does depend on the area. We were married in central Ohio. I interviewed several bakers. One of them wanted $650 for a 3 tier basic cake with only one filling. I thought that was ridiculous.
We ended up going with a baker in a the small town in which we were married. It was about $350 for a 3 tier basic cake with buttercream icing. We also used real wedding flowers. It was delicious. It served 120-125 people. I even had her do one sheet cake which cost $15 just in case. We didn't even touch the sheet cake, so we divided it up among our families to take home with them.
I'm also from Indiana. I don't remember what my baker charges per slice, but I'm paying $425 for a 3 tier cake that serves 100, 100 cupcakes, and a delivery charge.
When we were looking at cakes, the place that we contacted started at $4 per slice.
We ended up going with cupcakes from georgetown cupcakes instead (yes, the place that has the show on TLC) and those are between $1.50 and $2.75 per cupcake depending on how many of the same flavor you order at a time.
It really does depend on your area. Bigger cities like LA, Miami and New York tend to charge more per slice than the smaller cities.
Our baker is from Los Angeles/Long Beach area, and she's charging us $9.50/slice for a four-tier, buttercream icing cake with lemon & raspberry filling that feeds 150. The price jumped up when we requested a bouquet of sugar anemones on the top tier, rather than having a cake topper. We're having 75 mini red velvet cupcakes on the side and renting three cake stands (one for the main cake, and two for the mini cupcakes), as well.

Coming from Indiana as well, we're paying $2/slice, but ours is a simple buttercream frosted cake. It'll be four tiers alternating lemon cake and chocolate cake. Yum!
Philly...$5-18 a slice...depending on decorations; the more complex/ornate is more expensive. Will the florist have to put flowers on the cake? Will the cake have to be delivered from far away? Fillings vary in cost. Do you want a Kosher or Gluten-free cake?

We paid around $4.50 a slice. We had a vanilla cake with strawberries and butter cream filling. It was 4 tiers.
I really wanted red velvet, but it was $8 a slice.
