Wedding dress = not done

Here's the story:

Most of you know I had a seamstress make my dress for me. My last "fitting" with her was Oct. 12. At that point the dress itself was basically made (the satin and lining). The lace needed to be put on and the bodice and trim beaded. My seamstress told me she would ship it overnight on 11/23, arriving on 11/24.

Around the second week in November, I start asking for photos of the progress, asking about my balance, etc. She seemed very hesitant to answer me, which was unlike all of our previous interactions. I had to keep e-mailing her the same questions one by one to pull the answers out of her. Eventually she says the dress will not be ready in time, that she ran out of one of the beads and no one carried them so she had to order them online and wait for them to arrive. She says it should be to me by 12/1. No photos. She says my veil is done and she will send that. OK. (I did receive the veil and it is beautiful.)

12/1 comes, no shipping info. I e-mail her and ask if it was shipped. She says no, she will be finished that night. 12/4 I ask again. I explain that I will need alterations and have to have the dress by the beginning of this week. She says she understands.

Today, 12/7, no shipping info!!! I e-mailed her an hour or so ago and am awaiting her response.

At this point, I don't know what to think. Did something happen to the dress? I understand beading is time-intensive but it's been 2+ months since my last fitting. She's made tons of dresses so I would think she had an accurate idea of how long it would take. Or at the very least know if something is a few hours away from being finished (since on 12/1 she said she'd be done that night) or several days.

My wedding is 3 weeks away! Everyone is telling me I need to look for another dress NOW. I know it sounds so stupid, but in working with this person for />10 months, I feel like I've gotten to know and trust her and that it will be here. At what point do I scrap the dress I've been creating for months and months to get a sample? I'm thinking that if it's not here by Wednesday, I need to make appts at dress shops. WWYD?

(P.S. The seamstress is in CA, so there's no option of showing up there or believe me I would.)

oh my goodness! I am SO sorry! How freakin stressfull. I think if she says it hasn't been shipped within the next few days then you need to start shopping. And get a big chunk of money from her too. See seems to have had ample to to work on it and you should have it by now.
I am SO sorry you have to deal with this!

I'm really sorry! This is so scary. You looked for dresses and never found the one right? Did you go to Kleinfelds :)? I would probably start looking for new dresses if you don't hear from  her because if you have to buy one, there will need to be alterations and things fixed and the dress will probably need to be cleaned.

I am so scared for you but you trust her. Maybe she just didn't get anything done over the holiday and is just a little behind. I'm trying to be optimistic.

I'm crossing my fingers everything turns out perfectly.

Part of me thinks she is used to dealing with the bride all the way up until the end so she's thinking it's not that big of a deal? I don't know. I shouldn't need TOO many alterations (since it was made to my height & weight as of 2 months ago), but I still need my dress!!

I did go to Kleinfeld's the first time around (had a not-so-great consultant) but I may be making a repeat trip soon!!!

Wow, I'm so sorry, Melissa.  Honestly, at this point, if I were you I would give her 1 day to send you the dress finished.  Overnight.  And she has 1 day.  After 2 days, you will then go looking for another dress and be sure to collect as much as you can with emails and other communication where she said it would be ready by XX date, etc.  You'll want to cover all your bases in case if you have to take her to court for not supplying you with your dress.

I know it sucks, but at this point, from the sounds of it, you've been more than patient and given her plenty of chances and she continues to be sketchy and not follow through with what she says.  Honestly, if I were in your shoes I would be hurt, frustrated, and pissed.  It's unprofessional in so many ways.  She gave you a finished date, that came and went and then two more have come and gone.  here you are 2 weeks from when she said it would first be done, 3 weeks from your wedding, and as you stated you have alterations that need to be done and the part that really scares me is she doesn't even send pictures.

So I say, give her one more chance if you want, but I would give her 1 day to overnight the FINISHED dress.  After that, you've done all you could and need to look out for yourself.  Good luck & keep us posted.

OMG! I would be freaking out. Sounds like you have a lot of advice. I would do what Tygirl suggested. Hang in there and keep us posted. I would also start making appointments now, you can always cancel them if she does come through.

Update! I called her today, no answer so I left a message. She e-mailed me back at the end of the day saying she is overnighting it first thing tomorrow morning and it should arrive on Thursday (which happens to be my birthday!)...so we'll see if it happens. Fingers crossed.
