Paris honeymoon

I've never been to Europe, but have always wanted to go! I am thinking about Paris for our honeymoon...my wedding is 2 years away so just looking at my options now. Has anyone ever been there or have any suggestions? :)

Re: Paris honeymoon

  • The only thing I can remember from my highschool french classes is whatever you do dont look like an American if you go. Thieves seek tourist out there more than like anywhere else in Europe... at least thats what the teacher told us

I've been all over Europe (including 7 days in Paris) and, trust me, tourists usually stick out like a sore thumb anyway, no matter how hard they try to fit in lol.  We never had a problem with pickpockets in any of the cities we visited.  Sure, it happens to people occasionally, but usually it's their own fault for not paying attention to their surroundings or taking proper precautions (e.g., they put their money in their back pocket instead of a money belt, etc.).  As long as you use common sense, you'll be fine.  Rick Steves' guidebooks and videos are a good resource for first-timers (you can watch some of his videos on his youtube channel, and he has several dedicated to Paris and France in general).  He gives lots of great travel tips and recommendations.

  • I agree with PP, we are travelling all over Europe these next few year while living here and we have not had a problem at all with thieves.  There are some common sense things you should be aware of anywhere you travel to that you don't stick out and blend in with the city.  Also always be aware of your personal belonging, don't carry large amounts of cash on you or your passport, etc.

We I have been two Paris a few times, most recently in July.  Here is my blog post on our trip.  Also, highly recommend Rick Steve's travel guides.  AND don't recommend the hotel we stayed in, it was OK for a few days but TINY and not really romantic at all - just in a great location.

Another suggestion - check out the Paris discussion forum on tripadvisor dot com - excellent information there!

  • I agree -- in cities, common sense wins out every time, in every city in the world! I adore Paris, so I'm completely biased, but I would do it in a heartbeat if I could!! I would recommend learning a few words of French. It is amazing how far a merci or s'il vous plait will get you. Again, though, I think the same is true of any place in the world.

  • Paris is amazing. Be sure you are ready to be out and about, not relaxing, for your HM. We have stayed at the Best Western Premier Eiffel Park and really liked the location. Short walk to Champs Elysees and a fantastic view of the Tower. You walk out of the hotel and are at the Tower in minutes. You can take a picnic meal and sit in the park (we did for hours & didn't get bored). Very close to the train station as well.
I recommend visiting the Musee d'Orsay, Montmarte (take some wine and get dinner from a street vendor and watch the sunset over the whole city), take the train to Versailles for a day. Also, our favorite dinner was in the Latin Quarter and we wished we had gone to see a show at the Moulin Rouge.
It's not a cheap city, so be sure to budget accordingly. Many hotels offer a continental b-fast- take advantage.  HTH!
  • Thank you SO much to everyone!!! I totally agree about just using common sense - and that's for anywhere you go, even my own damn neighborhood lol.  I read through all of your tips and they sound amazing. :)
  • Packlite - i read your blog - that's awesome!! I bookmarked it and read through everything, That definitly helps. Thank you so much!
  • Thanks! Glad it was useful!

  • We are thinking of Paris and Rome for our honeymoon in August 2011.

I've perused this site, and you can put together packages, but I use it more for ideas than actual plans: www.europeandestinations.com. They have hotels and side excursions, etc.

I also saved your blog packlite, sounds fun!
  • Paris is really nice, but I loved the southern part of France even more. Nice was fantastic, and the weather was just beautiful. If you have a chance to add in some time to the southern part, do it! It's very easy to travel around in Europe and it isn't very far (or expensive).
  • If you are going in summer (july/august), be prepared.  It is extremely hot and tends to be dead--many of the smaller shops are closed (on holiday) and the locals are gone.  If I were you, I would do the south (Nice is awesome), and maybe take a train up to Paris to spend you last couple of days.

In my opinion, the best time to go to Paris is fall (october), then spring (april, may) and christmas is also very beautiful.

[QUOTE]You might want to consider a side trip to London.  The chunnel train gets you there in a few hours!

I was there a few years ago and actually found it cheaper to fly between Paris and London. Just something to keep in mind if you are considering a side trip.
