Room blocks

Pretty must all wedding etiquette I know I learned from this site. My question is on blocking hotel rooms. I have no idea about any of this. How do you figure out how many rooms you need? ( after STDs? ) Do I have to pay anything to block the rooms? How far in advance? If my guests decide to stay else where am I stuck with the bill? I plan on calling some hotels soon but didn't want to seem like an idiot on the phone. Hopefully you knotties can bring me up to speed. Thanks!

Re: Room blocks

  • From what I understand, hotels have different policies. You may have to just call hotels with all of those same questions. I let the lady at our hotel suggest how many rooms to block off. We did have to sign a contract, but we didn't pay anything out of pocket, but the rooms were released 30 days before the wedding, so if a guest wasn't booked by then they were SOL.
  • Different hotels have different policies when it comes to reserving blocks so be sure to read the fine print before signing/agreeing to specific terms.

You want a hotel that will start with a reasonable amount of rooms (say 10) and then add to the block if it is booked up or release the remainder rooms to the general public after a certain date (usually about a month before the wedding).

You don't a hotel that charges you if said number of rooms are not booked.
  • PPs are all smart :)

Be aware that some hotels will have in their contracts that you would be responsible for any blocked rooms that are not booked - and it might be in the fine print. DON'T sign a contract without reading it carefully. Use a hotel that will just release those rooms at a certain date, and tell your guests to book before then.
  • I just informed my family and friends who would be traaveling the best hotel to book months ago.  If they don't book it in time, then that is their problem.  I wouldn't put myself in a situation if they decided to stay somewhere else, I'd possilby get stuck with a bill.
