steve kas NT dj??

hey ladies, we got quoted today from a guy named Steve Kas, he says he is a DJ who has been doing this a long time...blah blah blah....you know every vendors usual bit lol....he quoted us at $300 for 6 hours, which seemed kind of low to me, when I go to google him I see him listed on one website and that is it, it isn't even a website of his own.....he is supposed to be sending me an email with references and what not, my question to you ladies is this, is this one of those "if it seems off that means it probably is" kind of moments????

I see nothing for him on wedding wire (let weddingwire.com be your friend!)

All I see is a list on some random site with a lot of DJ ads. I would meet with him, ask for a list of references and check it out if you are even remotely considering it. If you are willing to spend a little more, I'd do some DJ shopping though. You can find good ones out there that are still under $1000 but have the reviews online by legit brides to back them up.

ETA: the fact that I can't even find a Web site for him is a red flag to me

I'm not so good with the advice... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

My mom just googled for djs in our area and found that website that has the big random list of djs, he has a myspace thing but I don't really consider myspace a legitimate site to list yourself....I sent him an email back requesting references and a date where I can go see his work

I really think the best recs come from brides who have used someone themselves.  I'm sure someone here could give you a good recommendation of someone in your budget.  While it's always possible you could find that great undiscovered DJ, a DJ is someone you will really depend on to keep the party going, and my advice is to go with someone tried and true.  JMO.

Of course, it never hurts to meet with him.  But I'd meet with a few to be sure.

Ok, good luck!  It could be one of those things where he just doesn't have a strong online presence, but then it seems unlikely that he would have been drumming up enough business to do this full-time.  My guess is that he's been doing it part-time for awhile and is maybe trying to transition into full-time?  Or he's just been doing cousins', friends',  etc. weddings, and is trying to make a business of it now?  Idk, I would say it's one of those use at your own risk type of situations.  So I would say it just depends how convincing/legitimate the references seem, how important the DJ is to you, and how much the savings are worth to you.  But FWIW, there are better established DJ's you can find for not much more money.

$300 is the lowest I've heard of. (Not that I'm an expert, but have been reading the boards for a while). A lot of DJs that are very highly recommended on this board have going rates of $500.

Just wanted to chime in because of all the wedding vendors I've researched, DJs tend to have the worst internet presence. Some of their websites are not very good. A DJ that came highly recommended by my wedding planner didn't have a website of his own -- just mentioned on a website for a DJ company that he works for. So while I'd normally think that was strange, I guess it's not, at least for wedding DJs.

It's best if you can get a recommendation from somewhere ... I definitely like when I see my wedding vendors mentioned here or on weddingwire..., but I don't think the website thing is an automatic sign he's not legit or that he's inexperienced. Meet with him, call his references, and go with your gut! GL

If he has been doing it a long time and such, I would have expected someone from here would have heard of him (even in passing). DJ's do seem to be the hardest to find the good ones. There are a lot of cheap ones, but that scares me just as much.

hey y'all thank you so much for the comments and advice, it really helped a lot!! we got the recs and even went to see him dj at a party....He has a myspace account and from what I can tell he just uses that and word of mouth to get his jobs. He is an older guy but has been nothing but nice and had returned every phone call and email from me very quickly! From the response I have heard from the brides I have spoken to so far that he was great and  they all raved about him....we have a meeting this next week to discuss songs, timing, contract, and all that good stuff, for right now though everything seems great and if I can save around $400 (well spend it on something else haha) then i wont complain

    Hey
I saw thread re: Steve with SK entertainment...and I too am looking to use him for my wedding and was wondering what you thought of him and how he did at your wedding. I started to get a little worried after readding his contract. Let me know how he did. Thanks!!
