Wedding Woes

So The Bump is scary.

And I have a question.

My OB doesn't do any bloodwork until my 8 week appointment, where I also get my first ultrasound.  That kind of freaks me out and I want to make sure everything is going ok.  I'm 5 weeks today and my appointment is March 5.  I'm tempted to call and see if I can reschedule for the previous week, just so I can get in sooner and feel better about everything.

Re: So The Bump is scary.

  • that's normal. unless you were seeing a reproductive endocrinologist for fertility issues or any sort of reproductive issues, the doctor generally doesn't do anything until 8+ weeks. even then, you may not get a blood test.

my SIL never had a blood test. she had a BFP, went in at 9 weeks, and got na ultrasound. they never took blood to confirm pregnancy.
  • See, I told the doctor that I was diagnosed with PCOS previously so I thought they'd be a little more concerned.  Guess not.

  • Keep the 8 week appointment. If your ovulation was off in any way when you conceived, you may go in at 7 weeks and there may not be much to see on ultrasound, eonugh to stress you out more.

I actually couldn't get in until 10 weeks for my first OB appt, and got a really good look at baby, instead of seeing maybe just a sac.
  • Technically, my period isn't even late until tomorrow based on when I ovulated, which was January 24.  I didn't O until CD20.

  • Yeah, I'd keep the 8 week. I wasn't charting but had a wonky cycle, so I had two possible LMP dates, had I been in at 8 weeks, the later one would have made me 7 weeks, and I likely wouldn't have had a good view of the babe. My 10 week appt was perfect, we got to see her jumping around, wiggling her little arm and leg buds like crazy.
  • i had a bunch of miscarriages, and my original OB was never interested in taking blood early. the constant follow up never happened until I started with the specialist.

it's normal to be worried, too! you have no basis for comparison to know what is and isn't normal, so of course you're wondering. and excited. and i think 7 weeks is good to make the appointment for.

just ask questions here and bother all of us when you get worried. you'll be fine, and when you go in at 7 or 8 weeks, there's a lot more for the doctor to see and to show you, so it'll be more fun anyway.

i know that sounds beebee, but the unltrasounds are fun.

  • Ok, I won't change it then.  I'll just operate under the assumption that if I feel like warmed over death, everything is going well :)

And I'm super pissed I can't buy preggie pops anywhere within walking distance of my office.  So DH gets to experience BRU by himself today.

On a side note, my other lilypie ticker on a different forum shows me at 5 weeks.  Confused.

  • My OB doesn't do anything until week 10, unless you have absolutely no idea how far you are.

Try to relax.  I'd also wait for the March 5 appointment.

    A word of warning:

At my 10w appointment with DD2, we couldn't find a heartbeat.  It was terrifying.  My doctor reassured me that it was normal and sometimes it couldn't be heard that early.  He had me come back for a 12w appointment and we heard it.
  • I figured we wouldn't hear a heartbeat at 8 weeks.

  • Totally normal if you are't a closely watched case prior mc's or IVF or IUI and the doc wants a better timeline of what exactly is going on. I know it's nerve wracking, but there really isn't much to observe this early, that unclear info is far more problematic than it is reassuring. At least at the approximate 8 week mark, that's probably the best time to get the most accurate measurements for estimating gestational age of lil' bit.

  • I'll go w/ normal on this because, generally, it's up to your body right now--the docs can't really do much.

Warmed over death is the way to be :)
  • Soooo normal. And PCOS generally isn't a risk for an established pregnancy. Just makes getting there a betch.

It's nerve wracking waiting for that 8 week mark, but it's only a few weeks away. Try not to over think anything. I know it's easier said than done.

Yep, normal for them to wait until 8 wks and normal to be scared.  Also, please don't think there is a problem if you don't feel like death.  Symptoms come and go.

And yes, the bump is scary.

  • you probably don't need TB at this point -there's enough moms on here to help answer most questions.

warmed over death at 4-5 weeks is about right.

my doctor said 8+weeks too. I saw her at 8ish, no bloodwork ( just a urine test), and then got an US a few days later (about 9W). We heard Wolverine's HB on the US, but i think that the doppler doesn't usually register until 10-12W, and only then based on the baby's postition.
  • I figure between my two boards, which more people are moms vs. not, I got this stuff covered.

  • Everyone gave you great advice and it's so true what Taw said about not finding the HB.

The day they couldn't find the HB for DefConn was the day after my friend A died and the Dr. could see that I was on the verge of a breakdown and hauled in some mobile u/s so we could see the little stinker.
