Tell me you fondest christmas moments?

I have 2.

(1)  having xmas eve dinner with the family, then having an open house for all the neighbors, then going to midnight mass at  St Elizabeths (buzzed from dad's whiskey sours), then coming home  drinking more whiskey sours, eatting monkey bread and opening our presents.  Going to bed at about 4am.

(2)  My parents would put presents under the tree marked with numbers.  NO NAMES (there is 4 kids).   When it was time to open the presents my mom had a master list and told us what numbered box to open.   So for a few weeks we had no idea who's gifts were who's.  Trying to guess which boxes were yours was fun.   We failed a lot because they were creative with their wrapping.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

    That's awesome. :)
  • Every year follows a pattern - We stay up late christmas eve wrapping gifts and watching christmas movies - whoever is wrapping gifts gets the room to themselves and everyone else has to go into the kitchen to make nuts and bolts and listen to christmas music. In the morning, I wake up and go to wake up my mom, she groans and rolls around and says 10 more minutes and asks me to put on tea, I do and come back and shes asleep again. I wake her up again and she says ok she will be up in 10 minutes so I go to wake up my aunt. Ten minutes passes and I go to wake my mom up and shes asleep again so I start knocking on her door and walls to wake her up and dont stop until she sits up. Then we go to the livingroom and open our stockings first, then one gift at a time until everything is opened. This happens EVERY year, to the letter. Its hilarious now but oh boy did it make me annoyed as a kid.
  • My favorite holday memory is actually from a Christmas where I was all alone because family went to an uncle's across country and I couldn't due to work.

I sat under the tree and opened all my presents on the 23rd (despite my mother warning me to wait until christmas) with a big cup of cocoa, Holiday Inn on the tv and my golden retriever at my feet.  i just sat and watched the snow fall and then drove around looking at holiday lights late that night.

It was nice to have a drama free holiday.
  • - Whenever we decorate the tree or do something Christmassy in the house, we put on an Alvin and the Chipmunks holiday record and sing along. We just did this last week while making a gingerbread house.

    - My mom used to buy my brothers and I matching pajamas/sleepers and we would wear them on Christmas Eve.

    - Growing up the rule was that when we woke up, we had to go wake our parents up. None of us kids were allowed to walk down the hall to the tree until my mom was down there and ready to take pictures. It usually took a good 10 minutes because my parents had to wake up, use the bathroom, and get down there. It killed us to have to wait, and then when we got down to the living room, we had to stand and pose for a few pictures. THEN we could start opening gifts (slowly.)

-We weren't allowed to touch our stockings until after breakfast, but my mom has bended on that rule a bit in the past years. :)

    - I dove into the Christmas gifts one year and got yelled at. Whoops.

  • FI proposed last year on Christmas Day.  It was special because my son got to share in the experience.  I know there's more, but this sticks out right now.
  • My dad is in charge of the stockings, so that's my favorite memory. My dad isn't a big gift giver, but he loves to do our stockings so it's always fun.

  • I always loved the Christmases at my grandparents house.  Haven't been able to go in about 7 years because of work and then being here, but they were always so fun and filled with family and laughing.  There's always a fire and cocoa and coffee and monkey bread and delicious food.  All the ornaments on my grandparents tree are from the various places they've lived throughout the world and it was always so sweet.

I don't have specific memories of one Christmas over another, but just the nostalgia of those times with my family.
  • I love how we do Christmas and I'm glad T's family is pretty similiar.

Christmas eve I get to open one gift -pajamas from my grandma to wear that night. They're always very cute.

Christmas morning- wakeup, go out to the living room and mom bring me hot chocolate while I open my stocking. Then we get breakfast ready and eat our amazing breakfast feast (egg bake casserole, st. lucia buns, orange juice,etc..)
Then we open gifts...because I was practically the only child I would open several then mom and dad would take turns.
I was never allowed to rush down and tear open gifts.

gg, my mom would do the same thing!  I still buy pajamas for Christmas to this day!

  • 1) When my sister and I were little, my dad used to set up his train track to run around the Christmas tree---I loved loved loved the train, and it was a sad Christmas when the train was not put up. It makes me sad to know that it sits on the third floor of our barn, most likely getting pooped on by bats.

    2) Christmas Eve--our extended family on my dad's side would always get together for presents and food--it was like two Christmas's in a row!

    3) We always saved the stockings for last on Christmas day. At some point, when I was little, I had put a pair of neon-orange barbie shoes in the bottom of my stocking, and always searched for them on Christmas day. As of last year, they were still there.

Unfortunately, this is the first Christmas without my family being together. Stupid divorce---but at least I have great memories!!

  • I have a few from over the years.

My fondest memory from Christmas as a kid is when my Grandad would dress up as Santa and hand out all of the presents.

I distinctly remember looking out my bedroom window when I was 6 looking for Santa and Rudolph.

My son took his first steps on Christmas day.

The Christmas that my kids were 3 and 5 and were both old enough to understand Santa and what was really happening.  The excitement the night before and that morning could never be matched.

I still enjoy being woken up by the kids on Christmas morning.  They usually both plan together to come in, sit on the bed and bounce up and down until I get up.  I don't know how many more years that will last.

  • Every year we go to the mountain to cut down our tree. We take a horse and wagon up the mountain and we a take turns cutting down the tree. We take bets on who will get the tree to fall. After it falls we have to carry it al the way down the mountain. We then go for dinner, same rest. every year.

Christmas eve is at my parents house every year. We get to open one gift and its always matching pjs (I only have sisters) to wear that night.  Everyone gets real dressed up. Santa comes with a sack full of presents for all the kids, we also have a dj and a tooonn of food. After everyone leaves we wrap gifts and have left overs. I also spend the night at my parents house and FI goes to stay with his dad.

Christmas recently has consisted of my llittle sister waking us
crazy early. Every morning we have to sit infront of al the gifts while my parents get their coffee and cigarettes. Then we spend about 2 hours opening presents. I am always the first to finish. FI and my other sister boyfriend meet us at my parents house, we exchange more gifts. We always have keilbosa for breakfast.

After breakfast we open our stockings, clean up then take a nap. After we get ready we go around visiting then everyone fom the night before meets at my grandparents house in either sweats or pj's for a huge ham dinner. We always bring our favorite gift and share with everyone over dinner.
  • FI also proposed on Xmas eve using Santas bag of gifts.
  • 3plus, even when my sisters and I were teenagers, we would sit on the stairs (we weren't allowed down in the morning) and yell and jump up and down to wake up my parents.  I say you have a lot of time left for the bed waking.

This is all making me incredibly teary. :(
  • I hope so, Amoro. They're 11 and 13 now and I hate to think of them growing out of the kid-like Christmas excitement.

  • My dad has a job that sometimes means working Christmas day and his shift ends in the early afternoon. One year, back when we still believed in Santa, we went to my grandma's house on Christmas Eve. At some point during the night, my dad went home and put out our Santa gifts and stuffed our stockings. It was so fun to come home and see our gifts under the tree and get to open them because we thought we were going to have to stare at our gifts until Dad got home Christmas afternoon.

Last year, DH (then BF) and I went to look at lights with my family. The neighborhood actual has a rule that all residents must decorate. One of the homes has a huge tree, and they leave out strips of paper, pens, and staplers. The idea is to write your Christmas wish and add it to the paper chain on the tree. DH and I showed each other our wishes. His was "to win the lottery and be with her forever." Mine was "to love him always." That was a special moment. We were engaged a month later.
