What does a DOC do?

Okay, this may sound silly, but I am not really sure what a day-of coordinator does. I keep reading about how it's one of the best investments you can make for your wedding and I'm beginning to feel like I might need one and I'm not even sure why. :)

Other questions:
-What do you hand over to them and how do you do it before the wedding day?
-What's the process for working with one?

TIA so much!

The one I hired really helps you pull everything you have planned together about 1 month before through the day of your wedding.
I am giving her all my reception set up (votives, menus, ect), ceremony stuff (programs, bubbles, etc). She pretty much meets with you to discuss how everything will run that day and executes your vision.

On her website is a list of exactly what she includes in the DOC package:

Ditto PP. Our DOC is willing to give advice before the day as well, and about a month before we will be meeting with her to set a day of timeline. She also is in charge of calling our vendors the week of to make sure they know the timeline and to confirm all the little details we have discussed. She's setting up and taking everything down for the reception and ceremony, making sure everyone gets down the aisle ok, handing out all the vendor payments, etc, etc, etc.

Some DOCs will even help with design elements of your wedding if that is part of the package you get.  Others will coordinate the day, make sure the right people are in the right places, field vendor phone calls leading up to the wedding (confirming, taking/giving any last instructions, etc.), meeting vendors the day of to set things up/receive goods/services, and a whole host of other things.

If you're remotely interested, you might want to set up some time with one just to see what they do and see if your personalities click.  I used Kirsten of fab.you.lous events - it felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders the last week before the wedding.  If I didn't use her services, I wouldn't have been able to enjoy the last part of my engagement!  Highly recommended.

    Yeah, I'm in. :)

Thanks for your responses ... now I have to find one under $500! :) I know there was a post on that some time back, but if any of you happens to have it tagged (my "watched threads" magically disappeared), I would be so grateful if you post the link!

I know Deven Nelson has DOC services for $500 listed on her website.  I'm not sure what that includes though.

I was just wondering... What do you think the average cost of a DOC is?

Good news! I was a little nervous to bring up the DOC thing with my mom, thinking she would dismiss it as unnecessary and frivolous. Turns out I misjudged that one, because she was like "that might be the best investment you could make. That's a GREAT idea."

Ahhh, sometimes life is surprising. :)
