Acne - Remedies?

So I'm guessing that due to some stress factors *cough* wedding *cough* my face has made a decision to breakout. I normally use rubbing alchohol and go to a tanning bed for a few minutes like 2-3 times a week and that works. Well - I've been too lazy (preoccupied) tofind one here yet - so I want to see what you ladies use to keep your face clear of pimples.

I use AcneFree from CVS or Walgreens. It's a 3 step process and I love it.

I use Purity from Philosophy and Hope in a Jar.  I usually just get PMSy break outs though.  I've tried the Neutrogena Naturals, and I'm waiting for some Jojoba oil that I ordered so I can try the OCM that I read about on CAB's blog.  Usually though, I just use purity.. I love it so much that I convinced H to buy himself some and he loves it too!!

I don't know what type of makeup you use. But I changed from liquid to mineral and it cleared up my complexion so much.

Also, I found the more a strubbed and cleaned my face the worse it got, so use a mild face soap (without the exfoliating stuff) most nights and then use a oil free moisturizer afterwards.

I was reading somewhere that your skin will break out MORE is you don't use moisturize because after you wash your face your skin will want to get back in balance and produce more oil... and that will cause more pimples. So, moral of the story..hydrate your face.

So... I haven't had a pimple in a long time... SO I'm not super helpful :/ sorry.
    BUT.
I know a ton of girls that SWEAR by the clinique skincare.
They make an "acne solutions" line that a particular friend of mine uses religiously and I have never seen her with a mark since she started. THey also have a foundation specifically for ance-ridden people.

NOW, the one thing I DO use from Clinique (or own.. like I said it's been a while) that I personally used to wear by was this:
    http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=258773&PseudoCat=se-xx-xx-xx.esn_results

When I DO get a pimple it'll last a week and be bright red. This is the only thing I have discovered takes care of it. It takes the red away and makes them last two-three days max. Love it when i go to bed with a pimple and wake up with nothing. :]
So that's the only product I can for SURE recommend.

Thanks for the advice ladies - I'll definitely check them all out. :) I really hate the way my skin is looking atm.
I actually don't wear any face makeup - just eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara - so there really isn't anything but dirt and oil causing it.

AMH-I swear, IRL we would totally be besties.  I don't wear foundation or anything.. ever. Just eyeshadow, liner and mascara, sometimes blush, but my cheeks are pretty rosy naturally.  Do you drink a lot of water?  I know that I can tell when I'm not getting enough water, my face will break out.  And do you touch your face alot? I rest my chin in my hands alot in class so thats usually the first (and only) place I break out.

FTL-I adore that stuff, I like clinique's skin care, but that yellow, dramatically different moisturizer makes my skin soooo itchy.  Everyone else in the world can use it, but I cant.  Oh! and Clinique makes some crazy good mascara.  The emergency gel & the high impact mascara are my go to clinique products.

I am constantly battling acne (stupid hormones).  Anyway, I LOVE Paula's Choice because its cheap(ish) and really high quality.  For single spots, I use their 5% benzoyl peroxide treatment.  For all over treatment I use their BHA liquid treatment plus their face wash.  I've tried everything from Neutragena to ProActive and this is the only stuff that has actually worked for me. They sell cheap samples on their website if you want to try it first.

I also have a clarisonic and LOVE it.

Oh mah lawdddd woman NEVER DO THIS AGAIN! You're drying your skin out too much, and that can actually be the cause of breakouts... cause your skin is probably over producing oils to over compensate for the over drying! I would suggest either investing in Murad skin care products, or using Tea Tree Oil, which is about 8 bucks or less. Now, Tea Tree Oil is also drying, but if you make sure to moisturize regularly, you should be ok. Use the tea tree oil like a toner, maybe every other night? And if that still doesn't work, bump it up to every night. HTH!

(Oh, and for the record, I totally used to use Alcohol on my face. I just learned the hard way how bad it really can make your face. I don't want you to have to go through what I went through! :) )

I'm going to second CAB. Rubbing alchol is horrible for your face. You're stripping it of its natural oils.

I use Clean and clear morning burst on my face in the shower and then when I break out I use Clean and clear acne spot treatment. One tube of the spot treatment can last me like 8 months. Those two things are some of the few products that don't make me feel like my face is gonna come off

I tan like you do for my eczema and it also helps my acne but I don't have very much.
  • edited December 2011

Thanks CAB I'll look into that as well. The reason why I use rubbing alchohol is because its normally the only thing that gets all the dirt I get on my face from riding out in the woods - off. I mean soap and water only really get the basic stuff but when I use it it gets all sorts of yuckyy stuff off. But I'll try the tea tree oil and see if that helps instead.
Sami - I know right?! I'll use blush and bronzer every so often but really I don't do much more than my eyes at all. And I drink about 2 L of water a day - I don't drink soda but coffee/hot tea is my weakness esp lately.
Looks like I'm making a trip to the tanning bed (with spf of course) and to the drug store this afternoon. I feel like a freakazoid! Lol. (I know I dont look like one, but you know that monster image you get in your head when you have a pimple Lol - maybe you girls don't but I do)

All those harsh chemicals make skin worse in my opinion.  I have tried every product you can think of and this is what works for me:

Cleanser: Bare Escentuals Deep Cleansing Foam (I use with my Clarisonic at night)
Moisturizer: Aveeno Calming SPF 15 (day), Korres Yogurt Moisturizer (night)
    Toner: Kiehl's Cucumber Herbal Toner

I think the key is to get your moisture level under control.  Too dry and your skin produces more oil.  Also, it's important to be diligent with your skin care routine.

Please stay away from the tanning booth!  I don't mean to act like a mom but I promise you that you will probably regret it later.  I used to tan outside for years and at 28 I'm starting to get a couple brown spots and spend a fortune on retinol to get rid of them.

If I don't tan (and when I do I use a min. of spf 30) my vitamin D levels go down (and I really don't want to take more than what I'm taking pill wise) - and truth be told I just don't have time to be outside until after 5 and by then the sun is starting to go down. I'm pretty careful about when I do it and how often. I use spf 30 everywhere, and I won't tan longer than 10 minutes and won't tan more than 3 times a week. Nor will I go to the beach if I just went to the tanning bed. So I try to just be really careful about how I do it. I appreciate the thought tho!! It's just the one thing I really would rather not give up. I'm sorry that your having to go through that tho!

Kendall - I haven't! I need to google them and what not. I do want to look into the sun bulbs (the natural light ones rather than white light)
I just like the bed for some reason - maybe its the 10 minutes of absolute 'me' time or the peace of mind for 10 mins? Who knows. I know there are risks but I do try to take them into consideration and not completely just shrugg them off.

CAB:  If you do end up getting them on your face the retinol seems to work, it just takes a while to see results.  Worth it though and fortunately makeup covers them up in the meantime.

anh04:  I'm glad to hear you wear SPF.  So important!  My cousin is 26 and already has fine lines from baking in the sun without SPF which I think is worse than these spots.  Good luck with your acne.  If these methods don't work for you and you decide to go the makeup route, Bare Minerals is a great everyday makeup.  It doesn't exacerbate my acne.

Hey I don't blame you, I get soooo tempted to do it myself again all the time! I am so anti sun it is not even funny! Which is why I truly miss the tanning salon. It seems like you're doing it the right way, though. It's not like I do the best stuff for my skin or body, so I can't tell you that you are wrong, cause you're not :)

amh I hear ya on the 'me time' I love tanning it's so relaxing! The heat really helps my eczema especially in the winter. This may sound bad but I don't really care about the risks because it helps my skin so much and I just feel more confident when I am tan because my skin looks better and it doesn't look so dry and scarred from my eczema

MissR I disagree on the tanning booth. But I also don't want to start up that arguement on this board, so I think I will leave it at that. :o)

Samij- Yeah I love the clinique stuff but am not a fan of the yellow stuff either! I just don't like the way it smells :P I use an anti-age oil of olay stuff, and just picked up the hope in a jar that you suggested :)
I used to LOOOOOVE their mascara and it was seriously all I used for about 5 years until I discovered Falsies.. Now I will use nothing else.

    What's Hope in a Jar?
I guess I'm kind of not so make up savy - so maybe everyone can dish their favorites??? I tend to stick with L'oreal for eye shadow and either rimmel or maybeline for mascara. And L'oreal for eyeliner too. I need to start doing anti-aging stuff (I've heard your supposed to start at 24 - I'll be 23 in Nov - so why not!?)

It photographs just fine. I've used it on plenty of brides. And also, I'm wearing BM in my siggy... Non pro camera. LOL it's funny... first it was MAC makeup that doesn't photograph well, now its BM. If a professional is taking the pictures, it doesn't matter what makeup you're wearing. It's all about the talc in the powder you're wearing bouncing off of the flash and lights. Pros know this, therefore they have to master correct lighting in order to prevent light face.

Hope in a Jar is a moisterizer/anti wrinkle (yes. I know. I'm 22. I'm more than happy to use an antiwrinkle cream as my face lotion... If nothing else than for the crazy smoothness it makes me face!)

Eyeshadow has always been MAC for me, until I recently bought a whole box kit that's sephora brand. LOVE it.
I useclinique as my concealer for those days I'm looking tired (Macys)
Nars Orgasm for blush (when I don't tan I look sallow />_< like now lol)  (sephora)
    Mascara - falsies (grocery store)
Lips - dior or clinique lip glosses (Macys/Sephora)
Eyeliner - liquid marker (MAC) (makes my eyeliner sooo easy to put on!)
    uuh... yeah that's about it.

Blush:Cream blushes are my fav. Any brand, really. Right now I am using a MAC one though. Nars Orgasm is freakin AMAZING, though!
Lips:I just discovered a great long lasting lipstick from Elf! 3 freakin bucks! Oh happy day! I also love EOS medicated lip balm. It's the little balls of balm you see in the drug store.
Face: Dr. Perricone No foundation foundation, Or Dermalogica tinted moisturizer. Bare Minerals powder.
Eyeliner: Also from Elf, their cream liner, which is 1 freakin dollar! I love Elf stuff!

My friend who is a photographer said that she has to go back and photoshop the faces when they wear make-up with spf in it, because like you said the light bounces off the talc in the powder causing light face.  But it depends on the lighting, natural lighting apparently works best and doesn't really make white face.
