AW canceled school

Hurray! Superintendent just sent out a message saying my school system has canceled school for Monday and Tuesday so our break officially starts now! *does the happy snow dance*
I love working for education :)

Re: AW canceled school

  • Yay for an early break, but I have to ask how much snow is on the ground there and how much more is expected?

  • We have at least 15 here...I haven't checked in a few hours.

Now my mom is bummed that Fairfax Co. hasn't cancelled.
  • OK 15 inches would be legit.  I read somewhere else that people were freaking out in DC because the "snow is up to our ankles!"  That's just silly.

  • Outside it goes up to my knee so about....18" already and its still snowing like mad. Last forecast I heard was 24". Just talked to my buddy in transportation...Apparently the system contracts out the snowplows and can only afford 1 for the county. We have something like 70 parking lots to plow and that one plow is currently working on main roads and can't get to us until Monday morning at the earliest.

I just hope Dh can make it home, he doesn't get off work until 6ish. At least he has off tomorrow.
  • Wow.  That would so never happen at a school in Michigan.  Ever.

I remember them cancelling school once when it was like -40... and a couple of times during an ice storm... But, when I was at Michigan State, we had a huuuuuge blizzard during finals week.  About 3 feet of snow, and they didn't cancel classes.  It was miserable.
  • I am really hoping classes dnt get cancelled for monday and tuesday. I have my last 3 finals, I just want to be done already!
  • Wow, that's a decent storm.  I'm glad FI made it home yesterday, he was flying home from Freeport, and had a layover in Charlotte.  There was a two hour delay, but the other students trying to get home through Charlotte have been delayed until Monday.  They must be getting bad weather there, but I don't know what kind.

Zero snow here today, it's sad.

  • It's on its way to you, Panda. Enjoy!
  • Wait, what?  The storm is traveling west??  That's highly unusual.  I'm in Buffalo.

  • I'm just glad Dh is used to driving in snow with his car. He's going to have to pull out all of his Michigan/Maine driving skills to get home today.
Come on Mr. Plowman, keep it up.

Oh panda, I wouldn't worry about not having any snow yet. You're in Buffalo, by the end of winter, you'll still have gotten more snow than any other place in NY combined. lol
  • I teach in Loudoun and was surprised at the early announcement, but your piece of info about the snow plow makes complete sense. Enjoy your break!

  • LOL, we've gotten a little snow, there's an inch or two on the ground.  El Nino is screwing us up a bit I think.  I wanted a white wedding, not a muddy wedding!  But I'll take what nature deals me.

Also I checked a weather map in case Armageddon was happing and causing weather to travel backwards, but we're not getting any of the major storm.

  • Another Loudoun teacher? What are the odds :)
    I love lcps.
  • That rocks. I wish I had off work. Instead I'm going to have to find someone with 4WD to come pick me up.

I was actually supposed to work all weekend, but that's not happening.

  • Yeah, Dh got his car stuck on the road and now its sitting abandoned since he walked home. At this rate he's not going to work Monday because I don't think we can get his car out by then if some of this shiit doesn't melt tomorrow.
Hopefully no one totals his car while its stranded, if that happens we're totally fuucked.
  • That sucks!  I'm glad he's okay though, and hopefully it wasn't too far away.
  • Over here, we cancel school if it gets too hot. I think if it gets above 40 degrees c they usually cancel, although I can recall a couple of times it came close and we were still stuck there.

I am so jealous of the snow!

  • Nah, just a little over  a mile. He called the state police when he got home so they know its out there. Hopefully a tow truck can rescue it tomorrow. I'm making him cinnamon rolls so he cheers up.
The worst is the dog really has to pee, but the steps outside are pure ice so I'm trying to convince her to pee on puppy pads and she's not agreeing.
  • We got just enough today to turn the grass white and then it got icy... I want a white Christmas... I can't get in the holiday spirit looking at dead brown grass.
