NTB :), long intro!

Hello Everyone!

Just thought I'd drop in and introduce myself :) FI and I are newly engaged (2 weeks friday!) and we definitely have had an atypical relationship thus far....
we met on eHarmony in Jan 2010, exchanged lengthy daily emails (multiple times per day usually) Jan-May2010, then in one of those sad circumstances that you only think happens in a movie, we had a few emails/fb messages get lost in cyberspace, got busy and lost touch except for occasional fb pokes and brief messages and whatnot. We had talked about meeting in person but it never would work with our schedules, then he got deployed and was dealing with some illnesses in the family- he returned from deployment in May of this year and we essentially picked back up where we left off, except we made it work to meet in person (very beginning of June). He is enlisted, NAS Jacksonville and I live in VA, and it's roughly 600 miles door to door (so definitely not bad considering how military relationships can be!). He drove up to see me the first time we met (over 9 hr trip one way) because he is a gentleman and didn't want me to feel uncomfortable and for us to have to spend the day together if for some strange reason we didn't click in person... but nothing could be farther from true!

We began dating after waiting a month to make it official (I'm definitely not the type of person to rush into things and neither is he) and we have had some really unique dates... fast forward 3 months and he asked me to marry him. I was shocked TBH, we had discussed how we both felt that God had led us together for a reason and that we felt that we knew each other was "the one" but I definitely didn't expect him to propose this soon (not that I'm unhappy about it; I'm thrilled!). Of course, I said yes after making sure he'd gotten my dad's permission first (of course he had; and of course my dad gave his blessing). I'm super thrilled because my family loves him, and his family loves me- I just feel so blessed to have met God's perfect match for me!

We haven't set a date yet; as I said earlier He's enlisted Navy but he has applied for the STA-21 program and he won't hear back on that until at least the end of the month. We are praying that he gets selected because he only has another year or two of eligibility for the programs he wants. He has said that if possible he'd like to get married before they detatch him from his command to go to school, but that depends on when they'd detatch him because we are committed to doing premarital counseling and we definitely don't want to rush and not be able to enjoy the process or put unneccessary strain on our relationship. We are thinking May of next year as a possibility but we will see what is feasible; there are a lot of details to work out (as you all know!)
Big challenges for us will likely be:
a) me finding a dress- I'm a size 0; last Sat and Mon I went looking at dresses and couldn't find anything that I liked anywhere close to my size for a decent price (we're definitely going to be doing a budget wedding)
b) budget wedding: the biggest thing here will likely be affordable venues in my area of VA, plus then working out details for accomodations for his family (that will be coming from CA to VA for wedding)
c) actually picking a date, haha!

I've been lurking on here for the past 2 weeks trying to kind of familiarize myself more fully with the military family aspect of things (none of my family has been in the service) as well as doing some outside reading. You all seem like very lovely and helpful ladies, and I'm already grateful for the advice I have gleaned from the posts I have read! Would love to hear any and all advice you gals have to offer me on this new and exciting (yet somewhat intimidating) journey!

Kendall- Thanks :) Purple is a favorite color of both of us, so we are definitely having purple (dark, like eggplant purple!); otherwise we are debating with secondary color of leaf green or perhaps the deep teal blue (and doing peacock type theme)

CAB- I hate myself for being a size 0 too, especially in a wedding dress! at a certain point, you're just so small that you can't find clothes that don't make you look anorexic (and believe me, this girl LOVES to eat!) I hate that people always ask me if I'm starving myself or something when they meet me, and everyone feels the need to constantly try to feed me (but hey, I like food so whatever!) . I mean really, a size 2 or 0 in a wedding dress?! Every dress I tried on had to be rolled and clipped in the bodice so that I could have some idea of what it might look like if it actually fit me! Oh well; Prior to Jan of this year, I was actually about 25 lbs overweight; I changed my diet and eating habits and lost about 35 lbs between Jan and May of this year (just eating healthy, whole foods now and working out 3x week for 45 mins each time) so really, I'm not complaining! I just really leaned out and I'm pretty fit now; I'd love to add more muscle but that's slow going for women (and a whole other subject altogether!)

For themes, we are thinking of doing peacock colors but we definitely want to have austrian/british style tea for our reception. Not only is this a money saver, but my FI is originally from Austria, so it's a cool way to honor his family heritage :)

As far as how long to be engaged, I really just want to have a minimum of 6 months to plan; ideally 8 months or more...

LHT- Thanks ! This is by far my favorite time of year in VA, with peak foliage color change being next week!

My H is Navy tooooo!!! :)
We have been marrried for 2.5 weeks! haha!

My H did some flight schooling at NAS JAX and we were just down there this last summer for a fellow Navy buddy's wedding. :)

Budgets are always tricky. You guys will figure that out in time though. Just talk about what the most important things are for you guys in your wedding. Do plenty of research to understand the pricing of everything. We had a beautiful wedding for 10k and no plastic stuff used ;)
Keep in mind that when you google search "wedding ______ " it's going to pop up big name wedding sites/venues/vendors so they will be the most expensive. Consider looking up your local parks and rec areas. We found our venue for 1g to rent from 8am-midnight through a local parks and rec and it was INCREDIBLE on the ocean:

You'll be shocked with what you will find!
Picking a date is tricky. We set ours in STONE because we had a specific date we wanted so we had to work around venues for that.
Think about your colors or what season is your favorite. Maybe consider what season is nicest in your area. Does that narrow it down at all for you?

The dress will come in time.. Try not to stress it ;) I found my gown a little less than 4 weeks before our wedding :P

    Welcome to the board!

Check out the budget board on here, they can give you some great ideas on cutting costs. Another way to cut cost is to eliminate some of the "fluff" like favors. You can definitely do a gorgeous afternoon reception that would definitely save money. Look on doing it on a Sunday too. We did an evening reception, but by doing it on a Sunday we saved almost $2,000. (We were able to do a Sunday evening because it was a destination wedding for everyone)

firsttime- How did you find your location? It's sooo gorgeous! If you found it online, was there a specific way you searched parks and rec stuff in your area? I just tried a google search and it didn't seem to pop up much helpful info... :(

FI is trying to commission into pilot program as well; they really cut the budget last year and cut the number of people they accepted to the program; if they had taken the same number that they had the year before, he would have been accepted :/ quite a bummer for him as he's so passionate about it, so I'm really praying that he gets it :)

We have a sentimental family date that we'd love (May 19) but if he got sent to school in the spring then that probably wouldn't be feasible as he wouldn't be able to take leave and may have to do a summer session; we shall see :)

I googled "Whatcom county parks and recreation"
There should be a county parks and rec for any county nearby you, just be specific about the count. :) Thank you! I'm definitely proud of finding that venue, as state or county venues tend to be MUCH cheaper, and allow more leeway on what you can and can't bring in, who you use as vendors, etc.

For example I just put in Albemarle county Parks and Recreation and it found this in VA
    http://www.albemarle.org/department.asp?department=parks&relpage=2465

As rental facilities in that Virginia county :) It's work checking out (for whatever count you are in or near)

ggirl- Thanks for the tips. If we have a sunday wedding, my FI wants to get married on April Fool's day (such a jokester he is!) this makes me laugh and groan simultaneously. The only thought on a Sunday wedding is it might be more difficult for our out of town guests, and my dad is a Pastor so he'd have to find someone to cover his services that day (but that's not as big of a deal as the out of town guest thing could be). For "favors", we are thinking about a DIY photo booth where they keep a copy of the picture and pu the other in our guest book or something; depends on cost effectiveness I guess.

Sami- thankyou :) I have kind of looked around on there and I'm starting to compile lists of ideas that really catch my eye. I'm sort of crafty, but I have several very crafty bridesmaids so that's good :D

amh- thanks :) I am from central/southwest VA (Liberty University area). Me and the 0 have a love/hate relationship sometimes, but usually it's more love than hate ;)

Welcome! My cousin had a gorgeous emerald and purple wedding. Here are some pics it was a little over 2 years ago
He was Airborne. He's not in it now because he's an amputee from his second tour in Iraq
Monogram napkin little dirty haha but you can also see their table linens and my bag from the candy buffet

HTH and hope you stick around!

firsttime- awesome, thanks :) I'll keep looking; I'm all about getting the most for our money!

cab- very cool :) He also suggested Feb 29th since it'll be a leap year... uh, no thanks. haha

zims- very pretty :) I hadn't thought of emerald; might not be as pretty w as dark a purple as we want though; seems like lapis might be the best color for emerald.

gg- I am a paramedic/firefighter, I work a full time position for a Fire/rescue department and a part time position in a really busy Emergency room and I enjoy it. I am also in school doing a nursing bridge online (ultimate plan is master's level or doctorate level nursing as either a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or a Nurse Anaesthesist); I can do my schooling online because I'm already a paramedic w a lot of experience so that's good :) Purple is my favorite color too. I love to read (FI and I are big readers and love that quality in each other- one of our favorite things to do is read to each other). Favorite book is Les Miserables by Victor Hugo but I like just about any type of literature; I especially enjoy mysteries.

otherwise? I'm a southern girl at heart (but more southern belle than redneck, haha!) I have a 4yo lab/weimeriner mix named Lance and I have a hanoverian mare (horse) named Phoebe. I have lived in VA all my life but have lived all over the state since my dad is a pastor (we moved a lot when I was growing up). I love sweet tea (it's a weakness of mine) and watching thunderstorms from rocking chairs or swings on a porch. Yep, I love the simple life. :)

Horses are expensive! Super expensive. I didn't think board would be so pricey here compared to what I was used to - but it is. We're waiting for FI to get promoted and until after the wedding to look into getting a horse here, so hopefully sooner rather than later. But we'll see - I do love the lady whose horses I ride. :) So I got lucky.
