Best Time of Day for Ceremony and Reception?

I have picked June 14th, 2014 for my wedding, and we've started planning. One thing that we can't seem to decide on is what time of day would be best for our wedding.

Opinions welcome.

Re: Best Time of Day for Ceremony and Reception?

  • Most weddings are usually around 3/30 for ceremony and anywhere between 6 & 7 for reception. I'm getting married next year and my ceremony will be at 3 and my reception at 630. You have to figure on having at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours for pics after ceremony.
  • Depends on your budget.  Most brides will say that they find morning or afternoon weddings to be cheaper.  However, I wanted to have an evening wedding as I wanted to have dinner and most of my guests were coming from far away so it gave them more travel time.

  • Ditto pp's.  I didn't look to see what day of the week that is, but I'm assuming it's a weekend day.  You should think of your budget and what kind of feel you're going for.  I enjoy night weddings as I feel I can enjoy myself more.
  • It depends on the type of event you are going for.  If you're looking for a party with drinks and dancing, evening works best.  If you're planning on snacks and a short event, afternoon or brunch is better.
  • It all depends on what type of reception you want.  We never considered anything other than an evening wedding because we wanted a sit down meal with a large party type atmosphere.

  • It just depends on what you like. I like evening weddings much better than afternoon. I just went to a afternoon wedding and it seemed like the day was "off". She had dinner for us but it was around 4. Im not too sure anyone really eats around that time (at least we dont in my household). She had a DJ and expected everyone to be in a party mood with the sun still being up and to me it was just ackward.

  • I think it depends on when you plan on doing pictures.  Outdoor Ceremony? Seeing FI before ceremony?  Etc.

For example, if you aren't seeing your FI before the ceremony, I'd setup a ceremony for 1.5hours before sunset; this will allow you to get photos during daylight AND sunset without cutting into your cocktail hour.
  • We had an afternoon ceremony (3:30) with a cocktail hour that followed and a dinner buffet that started at 5:30. We didn't see each other before the ceremony so the earlier timing helped us have good light for pictures afterward. And then we had a weekday wedding so it was all over by 9 so that affected our cermony timing. It was at a Catholic church right across the street from the reception so there was no travel time between the two and that helped. Definitely think about the kind of reception you want- if it's the club atmosphere then I agree with another poster that the earlier timing will make that seem a bit off. We had a three-piece jazz band playing Sinatra for ours so obviously not the club vibe! And if you do it at a meal time, it will be more expensive than just serving cake/light apps.
