Bride and Groom gift exchange?

Hello. I ran a "poll" on my fb page and came up with mixed response. Do the bride and groom exchange wedding gifts? One gal had never heard of it, one said optional, another not really much help.

Re: Bride and Groom gift exchange?

  • I think it is more of a newer trend. H and I paid for our own wedding, so we did not exchange gifts. Our HM was our gift to each other and that worked for us.
  • I really do think it's optional. My FI and I have talked about buying a new mattress for our wedding gift to each other (ohh so romantic!) but if we don't do that, we will probably just consider our honeymoon as our gift
  • It's hit or miss.  Most of my friends did, but we didn't.  I would have preferred to, but my H wasn't interested (and I knew he'd never remember) so I wrote him a long, sweet card.  So long as you're on the same page, whatever you collectively choose to do is fine.

  • My ex- and I exchanged gifts at my shower, which has been the tradition in my family, at least in my generation. He gave me a pair of diamond and pearl earrings (I picked them out) to wear on the wedding day. I surprised him with a fish finder for his boat, which had nothing to do with the wedding, but he already had a nice watch and nice cufflinks and there's not much else wedding related for a man. We both surprised each other with cards on our wedding day, which we had not dicussed ahead of time.

DH and I didn't exchange gifts (second wedding, no showers of course, very small wedding that we funded ourselves so gifts seemed silly in that scenario).
  • We did. We were both slightly stressed with week prior to the wedding so we got each other something we'd enjoy. DH got me something I collect and really thought it was sweet that he took the time to find it and pick one of the collection pieces out.
I got him a nerf gun. Call me lame, but he had the biggest smile when he opened it and was way excited.

Some exchange gifts on the wedding day, we did it after our rehearsal dinner. I think it is a newer trend, but we enjoyed it :o)

  • We didn't. We had spent enough on the wedding and honeymoon already. Plus, we got married a month after my birthday and a month before Christmas and bought gifts then. I think if you want to, fine, but it's not really necessary.

  • We chose not to.  I did give him a key to my car as sort of a joke, but I did it because I'd never let him drive my car before.  I figured if we were going to be married, he deserved his own key.  He laughed about it.
  • Lol. I'm getting him some lingerie for me to wear on the honeymoon! ;)

  • H and I decided not to do gifts.... then I heard about boudoir photos (on TK) and decided I wanted to do it. He got the book on our wedding night after we got back to the hotel.
  • It's optional... Personally I think it's a thing where the industry is just trying to get people to spend even MORE money on their wedding. FI and I are planning our dream HM, so we've decided that's our present to each other and we'd rather have any "gift" money go towards that instead. We'll probably send each other cards the day of, before the ceremony.

Ditto this exactly.  We saved and paid for our own wedding, so we decided not to exchange gifts on the wedding day. It just seemed silly.  Getting married was the best gift of all!

ETA:  Agree with PP that it is just the wedding industry trying to get you to spend more money.
