arm pit problems, tell me I'm not the only one!

So I've always really hated my arm pits, because I'm kinda fair skinned, and I have what they call "thin skin", I'm any phleblotimists dream come true, but my natural hair color is really dark and it's thick, so even right after I get out of the shower from shaving with an amazing razor, my armpits still look dark because my skin is so light and thin, and my hair under the surface is so dark and thick. I've tried waxing and some epi tool that pretty much just plucked the hair out....I've also tried nair....all of these options are extremely painful and usually leave my arm pits red and swollen, and sometimes create infected hair bumps, which looks worse! I would never recommend any of those options. Does anyone else have this issue?
Also I saw a info-mercial the other day for a thing called a "no no" and I'm not even sure how it works, but it can be used on arm pits....has anyone ever used the "no no"?

  • I haven't used a "no no" but I do have the same problem as you.  I've noticed that if I keep up with the waxing that the hair thins out and doesn't show under the surface as much.
    Good luck!

I'm also a fair skinned girl with thick dark curly hair.  A few years back I stared using Nad's and haven't stopped.  I will say that the first time I used it, I actually held my arm up in front of a mirror because I was convinced I had ripped the skin off.  That is the only time it was painful though - I think I killed some nerve endings.

I'd suggest going to a salon and having it done professionally.  If your dress is sleeveless, I'd say a little pain is worth not having a five o'clock shadow under your arms.

  • Well, unless you plan to walk around with your arms in the air all day, this is not really an issue. :)
  • This is gross, but have you tried um..growing your arm pit hair out for a few days and then shaving it? I don't know how to explain it, but when there is more hair, you can get a better shave or wax.

You can see it unless your arms are plastered to your side the whole day.

  • no I don't plan on walking around with my arms in the air all day, but it would be seen if I'm on the dance floor moving my arms around, or if I put my arms out to hug someone.....If you don't have this issue then you don't understand, I might research the no no, I'm just too scared to wax again....Thanks ladies

  • You probably don't have enough time, or the financial resources seeing as your having a wedding!!... but lazer hair removal is the best option for the long-term. Otherwise... I wish I could be more helpful :(

  • I have this same issue and just recently tried having it waxed at a salon. It did hurt. It was red. But after about 2-3 days, it was perfect and I hear it gets even better after doing it a couple times. Maybe you could try it again?

I've also been told that exfoliating the area prior to shaving it can really help get a closer shave???

    Good luck!

  • What about doing what some women do for facial hair and try bleaching the hair under your arms? You would probably have to let it grow for a couple of day and I don't know if it would completely eliminate the problem but it seems you have tried almost everything else except lasor hair removal. Good luck!

  • I second lazer hair removal, My legs used t be the same way. Even though they were just shaved, I could see the hair under the skin. I got it lazered and its perfect. It does zap a bit, But if you do a coulpe sessions, the hair will be gone for good or at least several years. Its been years since I got my legs done and I barely have to shave them now. Just in a few random places.
It can be pricey though, but I thought it was very worth it. Good luck.

I'm a Cosmetologist, I would highly reccomend waxing.  I have the same issue.  If you are getting ingrown hairs it can be caused from a poor wax job.  There are specific ways you are supposed to lay the wax on and rip it off.  Your tech should be looking at which ways the hair grows ( Mine grows in 5 different directions= 5 separate applications in those directions)   Talk to your stylist about certain creams you can put on to help prevent them.  We don't carry them at our salon but we can order them for specific clients.  I would have another trial run.  You can get it down up to two weeks before the wedding and shave the day off, you will still have ALOT less hair growing in at that time, and it would give you enough time for the swelling and redness to go down if that is just a personal reaction for you. ( Sorry this was a book written here).  If you get really red and swollen that can be caused from caffine, or if you have something very acidic (oranges and such foods) to eat earlier in the day.  try taking some TUMS a half hour before and it won't be quite so red. You also want to make sure all of your hair is long enough to be waxed (.5 inch or so)
    Good Luck
  • The previous poster is right and if you keep up with the waxing you will actually start to see less hair grow back each time. It won't be extremely noticeable at first, but my clients that come for a regular arm pit wax tell me they definitely see a difference after a while. Don't worry about the pain, your waxer will go as fast as she can. It gets better and doesn't always hurt like the first time. I promise!
    Good luck!

  • I have a similar issue, if I shave in the opposite direction of the hair growth, I get ingrowns so I have to shave with the direction of the hair growth.  This doesn't get me a close shave.  Plus, I have some discoloration from previous ingrown hairs.

I started waxing a couple of months ago for vacaiton, and I can really tell a difference.  No ingrowns, and the hair doesn't grow back as thick or as quickly.  It hurt like heck the first time, but not as much subsequent times.  I was surprised that it hurt so much since I get regular bikini waxes and am used to waxing pain!

  • Ok, this is interesting. I actually came to this board to ask the same question! I'm considering waxing too. How long does it usually last? My wedding is in less than 4 weeks. Should I do it now, and then again the week of the wedding?
