Lumen or Hyatt Regency?

Hey everyone!

My fiance and I are trying to decide between the Hyatt Regency and Lumen as our reception venue. We are so torn! We love Lumen because it completely embodies our style with its modern elegance. It is also just the right size and we are confident that the food there will be good. We also think we would be able to save some money on floral decorations, as the space is so great in itself that it wouldn't need very much. The only downside is that the cost is a little more than we would like, but we think we could probably cut from other aspects of the wedding to make it fit into our budget.

The Hyatt Regency offers the advantage of a free hotel room for the bride and groom the night of the wedding. Not having anywhere else to go after the reception would also be great for our out of town guests. Valet parking is free for the guests and the view of the Arch is incredible. The dancing area is outdoors with the dance floor being a covered pool that can be lit from underneath. There are even heaters outside if it's a little chilly (we're looking at an April 2012 wedding). If there were weather issues they have an indoor room that would be used for dancing. The problem here is that without that outdoor space, the overall event space is pretty boring. It would be taking a huge risk, but it doesn't cost as much as Lumen and offers the hotel room perks. What should we do?? Thanks for your advice!!

I also looked at the Hyatt.  I really like the idea of the outside, but as a April 2011 bride, the rain scared me too much. Also, something to think about, was the nearly 4 minute walk from the elevator until you actually get to the Gateway rooms.  I was worried about my older guests, as well as my grooms mom who can stand for long periods.  Also, did you note how low the ceiling are?  It feels some what like a board room.  But I agree, the outdoor area is to die for!!! But I was looking at it for a ceremony and reception place. The Lumen was exactly the kind of event space I was looking for as well, except the whole ceremony and reception thing was going to be hard because of flipping the room. There are always ways to cut cost, and in my opinion the actually event space is very important. We are using about 55% of the budget on the space and food/bar alone. But that's just how I believe, im sure not all would agree.  I would pick the Lumen if you can make room in your budget. I have been to a few events there, and it is so city chic I love it!  We decided on Scape in the CWE. I love it because our ceremony is outside in the courtyard, with the Chase Park Plaza (looks like a skyscraper) as part of our background.  And then they have the Fountain Room upstairs, that looks like a loft.  They are so nice, and you only pay for food & bar.  No rental fees!!  Good luck with you planning.  You have lots of time, so you wont have to compete with other brides for the vendors you want if you do most of your booking early. I lucked out that way too because we got engaged Jan 2010, and the wedding isn't until April 2011. Have fun!

My daughter will be married at Lumen in Sept. Wedding downstairs and cocktail party upstairs while the room is being flipped for the reception.

Meant to say- cocktail party upstairs while the downstairs is being flipped for the reception. It is a beautiful space and we are opting to do some DIY things to make it all work BUT the regular brown chairs are quite ugly. I just bought 150 white scuba chair covers to cover them up. Lumen wants $7.95 each to use the nicer chairs. Our covers will be for sale CHEAP after the wedding. Anyone interested?

You mentioned "scuba chair covers."  I am not familiar with them at all.  Are they like the regular chair covers?  I always rent the regular chair covers for my brides weddings, but not familar with the scuba ones.

Scuba chair covers are somewhat new. They are a stretchy spandex cover that gives a snug, sleek look that covers the whole chair. Perfect for a modern look. Personally, I don't like the other covers. They look like a sloppy dress that doesn't fit well. The satin looks like you could slide right out of the chair.  Check out LInenTables for a pic.  Some places even have the spandex cover for the tables but that was just too futuristic a look for us.

Do you happen to have pictures of the spandex covers?  I would be very interested in checking them out.  You can email me at info@theluxeweddinginstitute.com

I don't know who Nicole is at Lumen.  We are working with Sarah Sordo.
