DW = OBNOXIOUS!

Re: DW = OBNOXIOUS!

  • I think the term "sock puppet" applies here.

    Yes, I'd be sad if any one of my invitees felt he or she shouldn't attend because they couldn't afford a "decent" gift.

    Yeah I'm pretty sure that I'd rather have my friends attend my wedding and bring an inexpensive gift or no gift at all then not come. Especially if they are driving or flying in, paying for hotel etc. You know, because I'd rather have my friends be a part of the best day of my life than get a toaster oven.

    I don't disagree with you, and of course the OP and her sock puppet are ridiculous, but one of my fi's brothers had a destination wedding that his mom couldn't afford to attend.  She is still hurt about it to this day, and it was at least 10 years ago.  I'm not sure if they offered to fly her out and she didn't want to take their $$, or if they just didn't care enough that she couldn't come, but she is still sad about missing the wedding of one of her sons.  It's a touchy subject in the family, apparently, so I don't know all the details.

    traditional =/= proper

    Traditionally, the bride lived at home until she married someone at age 16 - 18.  At that point, her family hosted and paid for her wedding, along with a dowery to cover the costs her new groom would encounter in caring for her and providing food and shelter.

    Today, the wedding can be paid for by anyone and hosted by anyone.  So long as it is done politely, with appropriate attention to the comfort of one's guests, it doesn't matter who that happens to be.  More often than not, it is either the bride and groom or their parents, or some combination of the above.

    If you'd like to live traditionally, feel free to do so.  However are you over 18?  If so, it's unlikely any truly traditional groom would want you at this point.  You'll need to finish life as an old maid.

    While it can be a little more difficult to attend a DW the traveling and the added expense, if you care about the person getting married then it shouldn't matter.

    I chose not to have one because I wanted some people to come that wouldn't have been able to afford attending a DW.  But, I hope if I did the people I invited wouldn't think I am "obnoxious."
  • Luv also posted this in reponse to a bride feeling miffed about her pregnant MOH:

    "I'm with you Mandy.  I'm not a little girl - I'm 5'10 - but even I would not want a pregnant BM, nonetheless, MOH!  Let's face it, having a baby trumps getting married - it just does!  She's going to steal your thunder!!!  I'd have a talk with her and consider having her sit this one out.  Plus, no one wants bertha bridesmaid in their pictures!!!"

    Cannot possibly be real.

    Proper etiquette does NOT say parents have to pay. That would be tradition. And yes, people are not as "traditional" as before, but tradition also changes with each generation. The typical wedding traditions people follow now are not the same traditions from the 1700s. If that were the case, my H should be pissed he didn't get his 5 goats and 20 acres.

  • Clearly beach muff is the only sensible one on this planet who has real manners.  Your wedding isn't about your "dreams."  It's about celebrating with family and friends...why would you have your wedding somewhere that would force people to spend gobs of money to let alone travel there, on top of the hotel and gift costs???  It's just really selfish and unrealistic for most people, especially in this economy.
