Pay for your own reception meal?

Soooooo one of my dear best friends (and BM) just informed me that her cousin got married in a park, then had all her guests WALK the distance to the restaurant for the reception where guests had to PAY for their own meals. I'm sorry, I laughed and was speechless at this. Why even have a wedding? That story made me feel better for any minor etiquette rules I may break. Lol So I had to share that piece of information. I found it rather humorous. :)

Wow that's horrible.  Obviously that bride didn't run that idea by knotties because she would have been run off the internet if she did. If I was a guest at that wedding I would have walked out with my gift.

LOL me too!  ....  I'm not sure on what planet you think that its okay to ask a guest to pay for a meal after your wedding!  That is just ridiculous!

  • Haha, well, I guess I'm going to Wedding Hell.  I'm making my guests pay for their own meal in around about sort of way.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

  • Wow. That is bad. I'm guess they must not have had much money, but still! How about asking relatives to help you do a pasta carry in or something. Would have cost like $100.
  • JCWhitey, isn't that because it's a cruise. Can you really help that? In my mind that's kinda different....

<div>Yeah.  When they pay for their cruise it includes all of their meals.  We could do a private reception but it would cost $1200!!  And my thinking is that we are all seated at the same table already, already having a sit-down 4 course meal, and we will already be dressed up for dinner.  We don't really need to be in a (not so attractive) conference room eating by ourselves.  So, I *could* help that, but it wouldn't be any better than what was already offered!  We're thinking of buying the booze that night and doing toasts, though.  So I guess we would be paying for something...</div>

  • One of my cousins had a potluck reception and specifically requested gift cards only on their invitations......Classy
  • Oy vey!

I went to a friend's wedding that 1) Was in a field by a lake that they didn't get permission to get married in so it was a very rushed ceremony 2) was at 9am and 3) we had to pay for our own meals/drinks too!
It's one thing to make your friends and family get up and break the law first thing in the morning but at least give them a free meal!
