Talk to me about your registry

Is there anything you registered for that you wish you hadn't, either because it's something that never gets used, or wasn't as great as you thought it would be?

Is there anything you wish you had registered for but didn't?

Anything that a guest got you that you would have never thought to register for but are so glad someone else thought of it?

And can anyone recommend a vacuum cleaner that's really effective for picking up pet hair (from the floor and furniture)?  FI and I have a central vac system now, but our condo is going on the market this spring and we are thinking that since whenever we end up with a house it most likely won't have central vac and we'll probably need a vacuum it's a good thing to get now, even if it stays in the box for several months (one less expense when we actually do get that house!)

Re: Talk to me about your registry

  • One gift that I got that I really liked was a frame where you put your invitation on one side and a wedding photo on the other.  That's been my favorite "surprise" gift so far.
  • We didn't have to return too many items from our registry, but I remember we returned the Martha Stewart spice rack because of space. If I remember correctly, the spices were expired anyway and who am I kidding, I don't cook, although I still love our Calphalon pots.

Things we should have registered for: everyday vegetable bowls and a gravy ladle. Hosting our first Thanksgiving a month after our wedding was fun, but we were missing some things.

And somehow we ended up with an absurd amount of dish towels but I'm really happy we have them now. It's been 4 years and I still replace wash cloths with the stash we got from our shower.

We don't have pets, but we have a Dyson vac that I love. It's just so easy to manage and they have an animal model that's supposed to be great with pet hair. It's a pricey item so just be aware of that, but I think it's worth it.
  • Ditto the Bissel pet vacuum ("Pet Hair Eraser Vacuum"). It works great on our furniture and floors with two cats, and my parents have it with their two dogs.

We had a smaller registry, and liked everything we got. I think some of the kitchen things we don't use as much- meat grinder, juicer- but it's still nice to have them for when we do use them.
  • i'm going to lose my mind! My fiance' and I did the whole Bed Bath and Beyond thing this weekend. I've had nightmares since.

To get China or to not get China?
How b***y will i look with an $80 crystal glass on there that i LOOOVVEE?

I've read so many advice things that says "Register for china if you will use it" ... i could see myself using it in 10 years but we're in a 1 bedroom place right now thousands of miles from where we hope to "settle"

i could use a friend right now :D

  • China and crystal are meant to last a lifetime - so if you truly see yourself using it once you get settled, register for it. My parents had theirs for 5 years before they had a house with a dining room and dining room table, but now they use it all the time. Also - don't be afraid to break out the china for even "little" special occasions - a promotion at work, reaching new goals, or just a romantic dinner in for the two of you.

Agreed - but just make sure you're going to use it.  My mom is pressuring me to register for it, but she never (and I mean not in 30 years) has used hers because she's afraid of breaking it.  I also have inherited a bunch that I love and use, but according to my mom, it's not "good China".
  • We created multiple 'dummy' registries that we never gave information for to our guests.  The reason being that once the wedding is over, you will get invited to registry completion events and get discounts galore wherever you registered.

This actually led us to putting some really funny items on our 'dummy' registries, like a peacock shaped tea-kettle. :P

As far as a vaccuum recommendation, we put a Shark Navagator on our BBB registry.  It was the best decision we could have made!  I love LOVE love that vaccuum.  It picks up everything you put in front of it, even pet hair.  And you don't have to mess around with bags.

    Anniversary

  • Our registry was really tiny. We really didn't need anything except cash for fixing up our house, which my mom spread around to people who asked.

One thing we didn't register for, but we got anyway, was a stand mixer. I'm so in love with it I want to commit adultery with it. His whole side of the family pitched in and got it for us.
  • I agree with the Shark Navigator being an awesome vacuum. I love the lift away version that we have - it makes using the attachments and doing the stairs so much easier.

I also LOVE my KA stand mixer. I use it a couple of times a week. It's fabulous! Also, get the flex beater paddle attachment - you'll never have to stop and scrape the bowl again.

The gift we got that we use the most is our cookware. I was worried about putting such an expensive set on there, but my aunts and uncles went in on it together. I LOVE it, and am really glad my husband talked me into putting it on the registry.

The only things I really regretted registering for were the "Just Desserts/Tasting/Cocktails" Libbey stuff from BBB. I was so excited to put it on there because it was so cute, but after having it for awhile, I realized we probably won't ever use it. Thankfully BBB has a kick ass return policy so it was no problem to bring it all back and get some of the stuff that we hadn't gotten yet.

A note about china for the other poster - if you're getting the fancy bone china, don't be afraid to use it! It's actually the strongest dinnerware you can buy. When we were picking out ours, the consultant at BBB whacked the dinner plate against the table to show us how strong it was. If you thing you will use it, register for it now.
