Wedding Etiquette Forum

And so it starts...

FI got a message on his FB today from a friend-of-a-friend... "Any reason why we haven't been invited to the wedding yet?"

Oy. If we had a "B" list, these people wouldn't even be on it. We've met them maybe three times.

I already responded to her ("we're so flattered, but blah blah blah....") but I just wanted to share that I'm annoyed. That is all.

  • Seriously?? How rude!! Some people have no manners! Just try to ignore it!

I don't know why people think FB is the place to ask questions like that. 1. Its rude to ask why you weren't invited in the first place. 2. You look like a dumbass for doing it on facebook.

  • Yikes.  Why on earth would you call someone about a wedding invitation?  That's just so wrong.

  • it happened to me (post stalk me to see how it played out).  it really sucks, but you just have to laugh and move on.

  • I am so glad that didn't happen to us.  Thank goodness.

That's actually kind of mean.  Why not just tell her that you hadn't finalize the guest list yet or something. Telling someone they're invited and then purposely not inviting them is really really mean.

  • I wrote her back with the standard response (I plagarized Squirrly from a thread earlier today) and she replied and said she was just kidding. Then she invited us to her husband's 40th birthday party next month. So hopefully she was, indeed, just kidding. Still annoying though.

  • Have you even sent out invitations yet? (Yeah, yeah, not the point.) I find people who know nothing about weddings are all, "OMG! It's 4 months out and I haven't received an invite yet!" Except my mother, who actually just got a wedding invitation 4 months out and thought it was tacky.

Yeah, they just went out last week. And she probably heard from some mutual friends that they got invites, which sparked the message.
  • I don't get people who think it's funny to ask that.  What an awkward position to put somebody in, especially if you aren't being serious.  But I bet she was, and felt stupid.

  • That's annoying. I received a text message the other day from a number I didn't recognize saying "How come I haven't received an invite to your wedding yet???" It was a bad day for someone to send me this text message due to the fact I had been stressing over our wedding budget and my family kept asking for add-ons. The 3 question marks pissed me off the most. I wrote back "Who is this and who would ask such a rude question?"
I regretted writing it as soon as I sent it because it made me look like a big b!tch..  It was actually my good friend's sister and she was just "teasing" me. It was still annoying though.

  • Been there!! My FI has a distant cousin (whom i've never even met cuz we dont socialize with them) that called my MIL asking if he was going to be invited to the wedding and if he is, will it be ok if he brings his kids with their significant others too. He wants us to add 8 more people for his whole crew...does he know that will be an extra 800 bucks??!! Yea right! We politely told him that we will be inviting him and his wife only being that we dont have a relationship with his children and we are paying for our own wedding. (ps..half the time this guy is invited to things, he either doesnt show after rsvp'ing, or he shows up without sending the rsvp at all) UGH!

It's one thing for somebody to ask about an invite.  It's another, entirely for you to be chicken when you answer and lie to the person.  She deserves an invite, and you deserve a lesson in being polite.

Dresses may be easier to take in than let out, but guest lists are not. -- kate51485
  • I knew I would get flamed for that!! She sooo caught me off guard and I didn't know what to say. Since it is a little ways away, I will explain to her, the next time I see her, that our guestlist is still not finalized and that I might be not be able to put her on the list because of budget reasons. I'm happy I put this out here because you ladies helped me figure out what to do. Thanks!

Sorry Akhensley for getting in on your thread.

  • No worries, misscourtney. :)
  • I have had 3 people ask about being invited (none of whom we'll be able to include due to large families and trying to keep a budget).  What an awkward position to be put in.

I had the same thing happen to me, the first time I got asked I was caught off guard and said yes of course... that was 18 months out though and we didn't have anything set in stone.  I feel like a total arse now that we do have our budget and can't include everyone, at some point I'm going to have to try and explain that.  Thankfully I learned from that one and the other two I said "Oh we don't have all that figured out yet."

  • FI's step dads, brothers "fake kids" got angry for not getting invited to pre-wedding events of ours.  We said absolutely not, budget is too tight, we aren't close with them and we never get invited to their things...they ended up getting added anyway.  Pick and choose your battles, it's so incredibly rude of people.

They took in kids when they were little that they never officially adopted.  Not foster kids.  I don't fully understand it but I guess they helped raise them.  I just love how they have to be invited because "they are like our kids" but FI and I never get invited to things when his step dad is his real father in their minds.   Sorry I knew someone would ask but I don't even know what the full story is, it's all too confusing.
