Getting in Shape

Non-Scale Victory

Guess they call cardio cardio for a reason! This weekend I checked my blood pressure, and what an improvement since January!

In late January I started making big changes to my lifestyle - and my heart has been reaping the rewards.

In January, my blood pressure was on average 130/80. Still counted as the high end of "normal" in the Dr's office, but we know that it's not a great reading at the age of 23. My Dad has clinically diagnosed hypertension and is on medication for it at the age of 59 - so at the rate I was going, I'd be joining him in a few years.

Since I started eating healthy, I've lost about 32 pounds and have drastically improved my cardiovascular fitness. I can jog for 40 minutes now when I couldn't for 60 seconds before, and my blood pressure has gone down to 105/62.  I just about flew off of my seat I was so excited!

My pulse has gone down to about 60bpm (range of 55-65) from about 90bpm (range of 85-95).

I feel awesome! And healthy! I like to think about the time that I've likely added on to my life now. It's pretty sweet.

Anyone else want to help remind people that making the changes we are is not just about losing pounds and inches?

Wow that is awesome!! Congrats!! That is really something to be proud of! I don't have anything that significant to share just that before I started on this journey I was always feeling tired and stressed out with no energy. I love how much more energy I have now and how much better I feel in general. No more tummy aches from the drive thru!!

  • Thanks guys!!

And Maribeth, more energy is definitely a non-scale victory! I think it's one of the best things about being healthier!

  • Amazing.  There are some many things that are more important than the number on the scale.   A lot of times people will obsess about that number and forget all the other benefits.  Keep up the good work.

  • CONGRATULATIONS!!

    I love this post!

We focus soo soooo much on what we see in the mirror that we forget the internal work. We often think "healthy" is still what you see on the outside.. the weight you are, the muscle tone you have, etc..
This just shows how this hard work is fueling our bodies on the INSIDE. Fueling us up for lifelong health and a [hopefully] longer lifespan.

    Way to go girl :)

  • Congrats! This is an awesome reminder to all of us!!

And I agree with Maribeth about the more energy thing! Just seeing how my body has changed, in terms of ability (how much I can lift, how long/far I can run, etc.) is so inspiring. I recently took my first spinning class with a co-worker and was so surprised that I got through the whole class and could so what everyone else did (standing up etc.)

    We rock! :)
  • the non scale victories are the best IMO
Sarah so proud and happy for you!

Some of my non-scale victories (my scale is not budging these days anyways!) BUT I have gone from a size 14 to a 10 and getting closer to an 8
my co-workers all compliment how far I have come and the noticeable change in my appearance.
my energy is double what it used to be and I think most importantly mentally I am so much more clear. I WANT to be healthy, making healthy choices is no longer a struggle in my head...I would prefer to eat fresh fruit over a cupcake I want to take the stairs over the elevator things like that.

I love positive threads like this :)

  • Congrats! Your improvements are something to proud of. Much more so than anything you see in the mirror. Being healthy is the bottom line and it's refreshing to have some so excited over such great improvements to their health.

  • I really have to thank everyone on this board for reminding me from day one that we're in this for the long haul and that at the core of losing weight is being healthy.

I know that without this board, I would have already quit and gone back to my old habits. You guys are the best!
