NWR: Phoenix-yay or nay?

For my fiance's school, they are sent to different locations for their 3rd and 4th year. He is required to chose his top 6 locations, and they will place him in one of those places. As of now, our top choice is Phoenix. Here's the thing....we don't know anybody who lives in Phoenix to ask questions! I thought I would post here to get opinions. What do you like/not like about Phoenix (or Arizona in general)? Is the heat THAT bad? Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated! :) Thanks

-I realize Phoenix is a large place, but I have no idea EXACTLY where we would be going.

I've lived in a LOT of different places...  and this is by far my favorite!

There are days when the heat really sucks...  but those days are only around for a couple months, and the rest of the year is perfect.  Just like everyone with rough winters spends a few months trying to avoid being outside too long... that's what I do here, but it's for a shorter time period, and we never have to shovel or scrape windows.  =)

I love that where we are pretty much feels like a family/smaller town sort of area, but if we drive 15 minutes, we can get to anything and find all kinds of things to do, no matter what we're in the mood for.   Most everyone that I've met in the area are really nice too, so that helps.

I lived in Phoenix for 5 years and had enough. I am now moving back to the East Coast because I miss the season. If you are there for a few years then it is a great place to live, but after that it gets old and you will miss the seasons.

I'm a Phoenix native and wouldn't pick anywhere else to live. No natural disasters to worry about and if you really want to go to the beach it's only 6 hours away. The heat in the summer is pretty bad - but unlike most places everything is AIR CONDITIONED which makes it bearable. Someone said you will miss the seasons if you move here, yes and no. We really only have two seasons, a summer and a winter ("winter" to me is anything under 60 Smile ). If you want to see leaves change, drive two hours north to prescott or sedona. It's a BEAUTIFUL place and a good choice. I lived in Germany for a year and Seattle for a year and a half and I always end up coming back. Good luck in your choice - it's never easy to leave "home".

I'm 4th generation native and I do love it here for the most part.  I travelled quite a bit and even moved to Colorado but I kept coming back to AZ.  You get used to the summer heat but like urmy said, everything is air conditioned so it's really not that big of a deal.  You can be up in cooler climates in a matter of hours; there's even skiing in the winter.  San Diego and Rocky Point (Mexico) are both easy drives if you want the beach.  Traffic kind of blows and our state government has it's issues.  I think we have a good number of great restaurants, entertainment venues and good shopping.

Like any other place it has it's good and bad aspects but for me the good outweigh the bad.

Yes, the heat is really that bad, particularly if you aren't used to it.  I've seen a lot of people who come here from cooler climates and are surprised by how hot it actually is (I have literally cooked an egg on the sidewalk when I was a kid).  However, I love the heat (I'm 3rd gen native) and once you get used to it/know how to handle it, it's really not that bad.  Unless you have an outdoors job, everything is air conditioned, so you generally aren't exposed to the heat that long anyways.

As far as the city itself, I prefer the East Valley (Tempe, Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert).  There's lots of stuff to do, good freeway options (still a busy rush hour, but not too bad), etc.

As for the state, there's also a lot of things within a few hours drive that you can do.  Grand Canyon, lakes, skiing in the winter, forests, Vegas, Cali, etc.

Thanks for the feedback ladies! Sounds like nobody hates it too much :) I know I wouldn't miss the horrible winters that we have in St. Louis!

I moved from a coldish climate to Phoenix four years ago and over all, love the weather. Sunshine just makes me happy. It also has a lot to offer as far as the arts, cuisine, etc., because it's such a big city.

I am born and raised here. I went up to Flagstaff (a couple hours north of Phoenix) where they have snow, you notice the seasons more-so than here in Phoenix. I loved it but got tired of the snow lol. It just depends on what you like I think. I have grown to love the water- the lake, river, swimming pool, etc. So hot temperature's mean I get to do some of my favorite things. It does get pretty hot, if you are not used to it you will probably be miserable at first. Like PP said, everything is air conditioned. You can wear a tank top in the summer but I always keep a jacket with me because I usually have to put them on when I go inside most places. The movies are the worst. And like I said, if you're not enjoying the heat, beautiful Sedona & Flagstaff is only a couple hours away. You could make a day or weekend trip out of it. As far as where you live, the different areas in Phx are different of course, but the good thing is that they are all a drive away also if you prefer a certain area that you guys wont be living in. I've grown up on the west side.. like FAR west side. I am a good drive from Tempe & Scottsdale (where a lot of people go on Fri & Sat nights), but with the freeway it takes me 30-40 minutes to get there. I like where I live because I'm 5 minutes from the lake. I love it here in Phoenix, hopefully you guys will get to enjoy it too!

I am a Phx native and relocated to SoCal in 2009.  Honestly, going to the beach and amusement parks whenever you want is the good life but there's just something about Arizona!

I definitely miss it and plan on moving back to Phoenix when feasible.  The people in Phoenix are a bit more friendly and not too snotty.  Its a huge city, but its not extremely fast paced like LA, there ample things to do and you can go from once city to the next in 20 min.  Its an easy place to live in.
