Chit Chat

I am not one to remain calm.

This is a non-wedding rleated vent. My FI started a new job in October. He loves his job, it challenges him, he makes good money, and he finally is on the same schedule as me (cat eye). We are finally at a point where we are comfortable and can afford the wedding we want, as we are paying for it ourselves.

He works for a national company, so it has offices all over the county. There is a tower closing down in a city about an hour and a half from us, and at any time at this company, if a person with more senority wants your job, they can have it. His job currently has two job openings, which was great. He had about a zero chance of getting laid off because most of the people from the twoer were supposed to retire.

He goes into work tonight and now finds out that all of those people may not be retiring, and if more than 2 people decide to come to our town he will get laid off. There is another tower much closer to where their tower is but, I don't know if they will choose that tower or not.

His boss happens to be one of my co-workers, and she always tells me that he shouldn't listen to the people he works with because they just like to scare people. I'm praying this is one of those times. I will be texting her bright and early to see if we could at least get an answer. I can't sit on this for a week.

I also have OCD, so I'm already an anxious person, and can;t really ever tell when a situation is something I should worry about or not. I just always worry.

Needless to say, I won't be getting much sleep tonight. I don't know what we do if he gets laid off. We make almost the same amount, so it would be cutting our salary in half. We could maybe live on my salary alone.

No matter what, I know we are fortunate either way, because this isn;t the worst thing that could happen. I just pray he didn't give up a stable job for this job and then ends up laid off.

We also live in a town where jobs like this never come around. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and if he gets laid off, he probably won't ever have a chance to make this kind of money again.

CN: FI may be getting laid off because someone with more senority might be bidding for his job.

Sorry that this is happening.  Try to stay calm and hope for the best.  Do you know when you'll actually know something beyond a rumor?

Now for the bolded part...  If your FI does lose his job, why don't you both look for work in another area?  Based on your screen name, I'm guessing you are an RN and that is a job that is needed everywhere.

  • We will know for sure by the 15th of this month. I am on vacation this week, which leaves me way too much time to think. I am all for looking for jobs out of town. He is more against because his mother is a widow and he's so close to her and takes care of anything she needs like lawn work etc. Plus, his twin is here and they are inseparable and it would kill him to move away. But, we are practical, and we need to do what we need to do. I am such a pessimist. I could almost feel this coming. Everything was finally going well for us. But, in the grand scheme of things, I have to realize it isn't the end of the world.

Thank you! It is not just a rumor. I confirmed it with his boss this morning. Now it's just a waiting game.

  • That's a really crappy company policy, I'm sorry your FI is dealing with that.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for you guys that no one wants his job.  Until then, try not to stress about it, good luck.
