June 2012 Weddings

Live DJ or Ipod DJ

My fiance and I are really trying to do the bare minimum for our wedding. We aren't getting any financial help from anyone but we still want everyone to have a great time. After calling around and researching, it looks like the going price for a dj or live band is roughly $600. My sil suggested just playing a premade cd with songs instead of hiring someone to play. Any suggestions?

One of my guest is a DJ but I don't know if it's appropriate to ask him to perform for us (for a fee) especially since he's coming from out of town.

Re: Live DJ or Ipod DJ

  • I've seen an iPod DJ be done very well. At the very least with that, I would offer to pay a friend a minimal fee to make sure it runs smoothly all night. Just in case of an emergency should arise, you wouldn't want to be the one taking care of it, y'know?

Who knows, maybe that friend will decline the small fee and do it for free!
  • We're going the iPod route... actually, a netbook, but yeah. However, I'll also have some live songs from FI's family because they are very musical and were eager to contribute. Brother will play some piano songs, mother will sing "Beauty and the Beast" for our first dance, sister will be doing some singing and/or guitar. Mostly computer run music though!

  • My sister's singing a couple of songs and my FI and I are doing a dance performance. I guess IPOD DJ aren't that unique lol
  • We were going to do an ipod, but since I got my new job our wedding budget has increased and we decided to hire a DJ. I think if you're willing to put in the time and effort of putting together a playlist, and if you can find appropriate speakers, an ipod would will work just fine!

  • We're definitely doing an ipod list of songs or a list of songs on a computer.  Two of my fiance's brothers do sound for different bands and perfomances.  When we asked one what kind of equipment we would need for the ceremony and reception he just said to let him take care of it.  We will be paying him what we can afford.

I've been to weddings where they've had ipods hooked up to speakers and it has worked out great.  I"ve also been to several where they have had DJs.  I think it's just whatever you feel comfortable with and what you can afford.  If you go the DJ route just make sure you found a good one.  At my sisters wedding the DJ forgot their first dance song and just wasn't that good.
  • we're having an ipod DJ!  it's going to take a lot of work to pick music (we've already started and we're picking every song that will be played) but i think it's going to be a nice personal touch and save us on the budget!  i say go for it!

  • I think an ipod will be great! That was our original plan, but my parents said they would pay a DJ. However, we are making the playlist for the DJ. If you are going to go the ipod route I would suggest starting to work on the playlist now...it is a lot of work!!

  • I think it depends what you are going for, honestly if i wanted guests to be dancing all night i would hire a dj, if i wanted some mingling with a little bit of dancing an ipod would be fine, it also depends how much it costs to rent speakers, if your venue does not have them, my band charges 50 an hour for the speakers (outside of when they play) which all night would be 400 alone so then i would just go with a dj. As i said totally depends on what you want, what you envision.

  • Wow, thanks guys. I'm nervous about picking the songs because I want the reception to have a certain flow.

  • My non-legal wedding this weekend will be an Ipod wedding and our June wedding we already booked a DJ.  My FI's sister asked her boyfriend to do it for us.  We did seperate playlists for ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, reception with all the first dances labeled individually.  I will let you know how it goes next week!
