tuxedo rental prices

Does anyone know the average price of renting a tux?

Re: tuxedo rental prices

  • It depends on the area and what stores you have access to. Normally anywhere from $140-$250

  • I told my mom how much ours were (143) and she flipped out, saying she thought it was outrageous. Just wondering what that going rate is. I am in North Dakota
  • I'm in upstate NY; we just went to Men's Wearhouse yesterday; our package is $122 +tax (after our $40 off each rental).
  • K thanks. I thought it was about average, but didn't expecta reaction like that out of my mom. But I also need to take into consideration the last wedding she paid for was seven years ago! Things are a little more expensive now!
  • My fiance picked out tuxes for himself and the groomsmen from Men's Warehouse this past week, and it's $168/person (with the $40 off).  If you have five people (groomsmen) to rent, the sixth/groom's is free (or you can get a credit for a suit -- your groom's choice).
  • If you are not dead set on a tux buy a suit! I got a $400 suit for FI for $135 and I'll preach on and on about it for years to come lol

  • The rental shop in my town (Mr. Formal) charges anywhere from $60-200 depending on which designer. We only have one shop and they are VERY popular so I think that's why they keep their costs down. We have 2 high schools with 4 formals each a year so they are always renting their tuxes. But from other places I have called prices range anywhere from $100 up. You'll just have to start calling around your area. Good luck!

I've never been an advocate for tuxedo or suit rental. I'd much rather the gents owned their tuxedos or suits.

You can see how wide the range in cost for rentals is. Factor in that your rentals have been worn by countless others and likely won't be tailored to flatter the wearer. If you want a natural fiber, like wool (which is what a tuxedo should be made from ), expect the rental to cost more.

If you are set on the tuxedo route, watch Macy's like a hawk for a sale (which come up all the time, it seems), snag some coupons, or open a Macy's account for the one-time 20% off your purchases. You can find some very nice Tommy Hillfiger or Alfani Red tuxedos (available as separates, for those gents who prefer that) for around the $200 mark when on sale with a coupon. Your gents will  be the proud owners of their very own tuxedo that will (with proper care) last them for years to come, likely saving them money in the long run. (Wear it twice and it's paid for itself!)

The above paragraph advice also works for suits- except that there's a larger selection and more sale opportunities.

    Good luck!
