Dress Alterations

Okay - I'm starting to get a little nervous about dress alterations! I had to order my dress in a larger size because it's discontinued and my options were either going smaller (14) or larger (18). I've already lost some weight and am getting married in 9 months. At what point will these alterations just become crazy expensive? I would really like to continue losing weight but I also don't want to have to give up on this dress! Any experience with this?

Details:  I had to order an 18W. I fit well in David's Bridal size 16W but could almost zip a 14W (wouldn't get over my chest). I've lost about 2-3 lbs in the past month.

Alteration prices depend on the fabric moreso than the actual number size of the dress.  If there is a bunch of layers they have to alter its more expensive.  My friend bought her dress at a trunk show size 10--she is a size 0.  It wasn't crazy expensive to alter it b/c it wasn't many elaborate layers.  Call a seamstress and they can tell you more as an estimate.

Okay thanks - hopefully it won't be too bad! I read a post on the Classified ads where someone said they were selling their dress because it was unable to be altered to such a small size and that scared me! I think mine won't be extremely simple because its a pleated chiffon layer and also some beading but hopefully it won't be too expensive!

I am shaped so that my top is about 2 sizes smaller than my bottom half, so that buying dresses is impossible and I have to have them taken in often.  My wedding dress is a size 16 because thats what they said I should be in at the store.  At my fitting last week, the seamstress said I should have been in a 12, it has to be taken in so much.  I have lost a little weight but not that much!

You should be fine. Its usually the style/structure of the dress that dictates the cost of alterations. However, I also do not recommend you have David's Bridal alter your dress. They will charge you a fortune for doing basically nothing. Find an independent experienced seamstress and it'll be great.

Also, a few lbs shouldn't make too much of a difference in the size/fit of your dress.

    Whew!

I've heard that DB is expensive but I haven't looked in to it or other places in the area. I'm a little worried about finding a reputable place since I've never done any tailoring down here!

has anyone mentioned Olga yet?  Click on the NC Bride Bio link in my siggy to find her contact info.  She is in Raleigh and does amazing work and at a great price!!  She will give you a consultation to let you know what needs to be done to your dress and how many fittings you'll need.  Contact her soon, she is VERY busy and goes on vacation in December.
