First dance song.. undecided

My Fi and I have had a hard time with picking a song. So many country songs (and yes, it must be country) have been used in EVERY country wedding. I told him how I liked "You Had Me From Hello" by Kenny Chesney. The beginning is exactly how we met, and when FI gave a song a good listen one night, he said that song would do. However, I HATE trendy or cliche things, and that song is pretty common, although not as much as others.

Recently, I heard a song on the radio by a new guy named Dustin Lynch. It's called "Cowboys and Angels" and I like it way better. I feel like it fits our more rustic country wedding and its new so it isnt the song every redneck couple have used. It doesn't completely scream "wedding" like Kenny Chesney's song does, but I kinda like that about it.

I'm afraid to say anything to FI because I'm afraid he will say no. I know thats stupid to say, but I really like this one better and I don't really know why. We really struggled trying to get to any agreement and now I don't know if I should stir the pot again.

Suggestions? What songs are you all picking???

Re: First dance song.. undecided

  • We are also using a country song and it just so happens to be the first song we ever danced to. It is called Freeze Frame Time and it is by a Texas Country artist Brandon Rhyder. This was a no braner for us because it is totally not trendy or cliche however the words fit perfectly! Only a handful of our guests will know the song but we actually prefer it that way!

  • You know, we were just so set on and Edwin McCain song but I keep hearing songs that I love and that seem to be a better reflection of "us" and now I'm confused too. I think FI and I are really gonna have to work on that together....
    Sorry I'm no help lol

  • Exactly! Glad someone else feels the same way. I don't even really like Kenny Chesney a ton but it was the least cliche song, and has a little bit of meaning to us. Our DJ, who is the top country/line dancing DJ in the area, even told us not to pick songs that are common. Someone suggested "Lost in This Moment" by Big and Rich but I didn't think that was a good first dance song, but we may exit the ceremon to that.
  • I think you still have plenty of time to think of songs to dance to :)  If there is an artist you like, I recommend checking out their iTunes page for their albums.  Take the little listens to songs, and if something catches you, google the lyrics and youtube the entire song.  You may find that you really like an upcoming artist or someone from way back.

I would like to use Clay Walker "Live, Laugh, Love" because it's our theme and I love the song.  It's not necessarily "wedding" but I love it.  We would have to practice a little bit because FI is a better 2stepper than I, he grew up doing it.  He doesn't like to dance with me because I "step on his feet" :/

I'm also currently obsessed with Green River Ordinance "Dancing Shoes" and would like that to be my (I always mix these names up. recessional? me walking down the aisle)  I want "If I Were A Carpenter" by Johnny & June for the other direction.  FI isn't so on board, but he's really traditional when it comes to weddings, simply because he just knows the way they do things around here.  I don't really want the whole Canon in D thing.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  •  First off Congrats !!!!!!  Here is a few songs that I am considering again im like you i dont wanna go with what everyone else usually does, I want something of our own but here is a few im running thru my mind...

      Paul Brandt - I do

  • lol thats cool :)
  • I know what song I want for our first dance, but I can't get FI to agree and it's really bumming me out. I also realize that we have plenty of time to decide. I think the problem for us is that we don't listen to a lot of "slow dance" songs, and we don't want to just randomly pick one that has no meaning to us.
    Anniversary
  • If you are set on not having a popular/cliche song I would wait a bit. I think Cowboys & Angles has the potential to be a popular one (I think its a great choice though!).
Also, I have heard In This Moment (Big & Rich) and Bless the Broken Road & When You Say Nothing at All done at several weddings.
We are also set on not having a super traditional song, but I think we have it narrowed down. Its the other songs (father-daughter, processional & recessional that we are stuck with)
  • Every one's songs sound great.  We are using Blake Shelton's God Gave Me You, and I think Randy Travis' Deeper Than The Hollow for the anniversary dance.  We haven't figured the rest out yet.

  • Like Loriann2012 we're going to be using God Bless the Broken Road by Rascal Flatts....it is well known and probably done at a lot of weddings, but it really does fit our relationship so it's just right for us....

I LOVE this song, and gave ity a good listen. But then I looked into the band themselves and realized they aren't even a country group at all. Thats something we are really adamant about... I'm super weird about songs that aren't 100% country or groups who are doing country just to make $$ in another genre. /rant.

Most of the songs mentioned by PPs I have looked into or know people who have used them. I didn't talk to FI about wedding stuff because when I tried I got "Its Super Bowl Sunday... nothing else will be discussed right now."
