Holy crud Nik! That is ridiculous. I can't believe that HR didn't care at all...Posted by midgetthemighty
She acted like she cared on the phone and said she would tell the owner. I went in there two months after I quit and he was there giving me crap for coming in to eat. All my coworkers told me that nothing had changed since I left.

  • Compared to everyone else's jobs, my time at Dairy Queen and Wal-Mart weren't so bad. Dairy Queen was from 5:30 - 10:30 AM in college.  First day there I knew I couldn't do it forever.  I was bored!  Wal-Mart was okay during summers of college, but then I worked Saturdays for 11 years.  I started to feel like a robot constanting scanning things.  We were no longer allowed to have any fun, not even talk to each other while straightening shelves.  I don't miss it at all!

  • DrPB. You have plenty of social skills, and I can tell that just from the internet. You're super smart. Your boss was a jerk. The part that most upset me reading yours was her putting a blind eye to other employees making fun of the clients. That seriously makes my blood boil.
  • I haven't had that many terrible jobs. My worst though would have to be a local buffet/steakhouse. The hot well drain on the buffet was broken so we had to empty the boiling water into buckets and carry it into kitchen to dump down the drain. I was emptying a bucket into the sink and it slippedand poured the water all down the front of me. Resulting in 2nd degree burns. After my mother picked me up and took me to the hospital my manager yelled at me for not finding him right when it happened. Because ultimately when your flesh is burning your first thought is "I should really get my manager?" ummm no. It was "I am running into the freezer so I can't feel the burning." When I returned to work a few weeks later the managers were making fun of me saying how they would empty the well so that I wouldn't pour it all down the front of me. This is going to sound weird but I clean up after people everyday (blood, poop, pee, etc) and I think I have grown somewhat immune. It is still disgusting, don't get me wrong, I just don't let it get to me as much anymore.

  • I pierced ears at one of those kiosks in the mall.. screaming children 24/7 (can't blame them it hurts), then parents wanting a refund because the dots THEY MARKED on their childs ear wasn't straight enough.. ugh it just goes on and on. Plus it was one of those places that had a TON of jewelry under the glass and when I closed (Which was every shift)I had to count EVERY SINGLE PIECE and follow a specific jigsaw puzzle type way to store them underneath in the safe.

Aw, thank you Jess!  My other employers, coworkers, professors, and many friends all agree :)

The whole thing made me furious, too. One of my coworkers had reported it before I was hired, and after a "talking to" apparently it lessened for a short while, but it would still happen in front of my boss's open door so clearly she really didn't give a crap.  And the HR people there were totally incompetent, so moving complaints upwards did absolutely no good.

  • I only have had three jobs (I am 24)I worked at my sisiter's restaurant from 11 to 17 and then a grocery store 17 to now and teaching 2010 to now. I haven't had a "bad" job; but many bad days and as a substitute there are many classrooms I would rather not go into again!

Many of my friends are teachers, but had to take sub jobs in various places before they found more permanent placements.  I got to find out what schools in Maine and New Hampshire have a hard time finding substitute teachers, because NOBODY will sub for them anymore!

  • I'd have to tie either being a janitor in jr. high at the elementary school, waitress at a 24/7 restaurant and this job now! Janitor: gross for the obvious reasons, but it was only 2 hours a day, no weekends. So at 14 it made sense. Waitress: drunks idiots, sleazy managers. Manager at the hair salon: working with the angry public.... and indecisive people! Public in general...I get all types that make me hate my job. Before I was managing I loved it every day.

  • My worst job was working in accounts receivable at a well known payroll company.  Most of the business owners we dealt with were relatively small businesses, but they do handle a lot of larger accounts as well.

Anyway, accounts receivable at this company involves getting screamed at by idiot customers on a daily basis.  It wasn't out of the ordinary for someone to drop an f-bomb while ranting at me, or to bring me almost to tears.  There were a few customers that had made an honest mistake in not paying or something, but there were quite a few that just couldn't do basic math, couldn't be bothered to open their mail, or think that mailing the payment on the due date will equal us getting the payment that day (takes about 2 weeks for processing).  These were always the crazies that thought they were owed something.  One guy even threatened to get the DA on the phone and sue me!

On top of this, management monitors how much you collect, how much time you spend off the phone, and can see your computer screen at any given moment.  Sketchy.

On the upside, it did teach my quite a lot about how to get the results I want when I'm on the phone with someone in a call center!
