• It is Tacky! That's what is wrong with it. People should not celebrate their marriage in the same way they celebrate a 3 day weekend in may!

or just a random Tuesday when the weather is nice.
  • It's kind of lame and cheap, and not all that fun for the couple or the guests.

  • Well I am having a backyard BBQ wedding. We are having a ceremony in my family's barn....(nice no-functional barn) and a tented reception in the backyard…..a backyard that overlooks a beautiful landscape of land…land…and more land.. My FI co-owns a BBQ restaurant and catering business so yes....we are using his company. Which, surprisingly enough is the most widely used catering company in the area.

so you're having the food catered? because that is not the same thing she was talking about.

having BBQ food =/= backyard BBQ wedding. unless you or a family member is standing over a grill making the guests burgers.

    1) what makes a barn "nice"? (lack of animal feces/smell)? I've never been in a barn that wasn't being used for the intended purpose of housing animals/farm equipment/harvested items, so I'm curious about this.

    2) I'm craving BBQ now. damn you.

You are having a catered event, It's not like you are having your redneck uncle grilling pork bellies and pig feet in a dirty apron. There is a difference.
  • weddings don't have to be crazingly expensive. find what works within your budget.
  • Backyard weddings can go either way. It's completely possible to have a classy wedding that way, but it is also really easy to have a wedding that is tacky as hell.

  • If you're going to have a backyard wedding, just make sure your husband changes out of his mowing grass outfit first. :)
  • True. It is not hot dogs and hamburgers, potato salad and corn bread…..but it is still BBQ. Smoked Salmon, ribs, grilled veggies…..and so on instead. And, it is still technically a backyard. Their backyard just happens to be on the top of a mountain and equipped with a barn.

So Backyard BBQ wedding =/= tacky since it can go either way.

It used to be a barn for horses. When they bought the place they did not want animals so they gutted the barn (took our stalls, equipment…etc) and added nice flooring, new windows and updated lighting fixtures.

  • Barbie, there's a great vineyard restaurant that is basically their old carriage barn that was remodeled (and I'm sure some thing were gutted, built over) in Hermann. I think it was Stone Hill, but I can't quite remember. It can be done really well.

The only part of a barn that's "stinky" is a stall and that should be mucked out each morning. So really the smell is usually just of horse (which has a smell like your dogs have a dog smell and if it's bathed appropriately that is reduced) and the hay or sawdust in the stalls. If you smell poop, it's not a good barn. Horses standing in feces is unhealthy in lots and lots of ways.

Where's Hermann? If it's near Houston, I'll have to check it out.

I'm not saying barns can't be gutted and refinished, but i guess at that point, in my mind it's not really a barn. i'm a suburbs/city kid without much exposure to farms other than a few "tour the working farm" field trips and the horse barn at summer camp.

oh man, nola. that is a blast from the past. the cake. the pile of garbage. the skin showing because the shirt is riding up.

    i love the comments.

i also love the hot pink and neon green wedding if you start at the beginning of the blog.

  • Hee. Hermann is in MO, sorry, one of the wine trails in the state (and the sucky one, IMHO). I forget everything isn't centered around Varuna's universe.

[QUOTE]How do I get this man to settle on a date? We have changed our wedding date twice now! He keeps asking if we could push it back, first it was because of me getting pregnant and he said the wedding would have been way to close to my due date. I agreed and we set it for a year later. After our son was born he said that the wedding was going to cost to much money and that we should delay it for one more year, he even suggested we go to city hall and get married quietly and then have the real wedding. I agreed on pushing it back a year but declined to go to city hall, maybe this sounds silly but I want a real wedding with all my family and friends their, not a vow renewal. So this morning he said that we should hold off to 2015!!! So we can save money! I told him no and that if we are getting married it is going to be next year! Then I childishly stormed out of the house. I texted him to go stay at his friends house until he figures out what he wants to do. Am I overreacting? Any insight or advice is very welcome.

Bolded makes it sound like he doesn't care about putting on a big wedding and would be more content not making a big deal out of it - I don't think it means he doesn't want to marry you though.

  • OMG!! I am o-so embarrassed!!! I am having an outdoor wedding at an old mill with my beer swigging uncle standing over his 16ft trailer with a smoker, oven, fryer, full sinks, and refrigerator on it. He will be cooking pulled pork, hamburgers and hot dogs for the kids, potato salad, beans, and hand breaded onion rings. FI is wearing a new weastern shirt and jeans, my MOH will be so preggers we will prolly have to wheel her down the aisle, our boy's outfit will match FI's, my uncle the southern baptist preacher is doing the ceremony, and my mom is threatening to wear head to toe denim. Holy cow this is going to be the tackiest wedding ever!! lmao Don't care, for me an inexpensive FUN wedding tops the stuffy over priced affair that I could have.

  • Not that there is anything wrong with a stuffy over priced wedding. I am sure they can be fun too. :)
