Military formal dinner

H's unit has one coming up soon. I went dress looking today. The military brides ball pictures aren't working for me.

Would you guys be able to give me your thoughts on a few dresses?

Re: Military formal dinner

  • Long, simple, elegant. You can post ideas, I'm sure people will help.
    I hate Dave Ramsey
  • I bought my one and only formal dinner/ball gown was from David's Bridal.  It was a bride's maid dress and it was WELL within my very cheap budget.  I don't really plan on wearing it to more than 2 or 3 events so I didn't want to spend a lot.  When I worked at the dry cleaner we cleaned a lot of formal gowns for military events (since we were at a base).  The majority of those also came from David's so I'd say that would be a good start.  Even if you don't purchase one there you can get an idea of what is appropriate.

  • I bought a very simple black, floor length gown from Macy's online store for $70.  I was prefect and I can wear it multiple times by changing up the look.  I wore it with red shoes and jewlery this time.  I have another event coming up.  I plan to wear bright blue accessories, change up my hair and wear silver shoes.

  • Ross or TJ Maxx or something like that often have nice formal dresses for not much money.  I got a beautiful red gown for $40.

I went and tried on a few dresses yesterday. These were my favorites. I'm leaning toward a puple or dark pink dress.  Do I have the right idea with the dresses?

Detail. Sorry about the boob shot http://tinypic.com/r/fmm7h1/5

#4 This dress didn't fit because they didn't have the right size http://tinypic.com/r/14vmubr/5

  • I like your first and fourth ones the most. 3 looks like a wannabe wedding dress, and for some reason 2 just reminds me of a high school prom dress (but that's just me). I think you have the right idea though. I really like the first one, I think its been on my list of possibles before.

I love the 4th one because it didn't make me look huge.

Agreed. Personally I could more simple because all of them remind me of a high school dance dress

I tried it on that was all. I wouldn't ever spend that on a dress. The lady said they are having a HUGE sale in the next few weeks.

  • We gave you a lot of good options.  Specialty gown stores like that are probably not going to have what you are looking for unless you go for a bride's maid dress.  We have a store like that in our town that caters primarily to pageant girls ie. people that don't mind spending $400 on a gown.  Plus it's prom season.  NOt much will be discounted now.

  • I'd say that one is a wise choice.  It doesn't look too promy either.

I didn't get the girls that spent $400 on their prom dress each year. I got mine for like $150 from JcPenneys and loved it. Yeah I loved the dresses the girls paid $400 for but that's just dumb

  • Zims - I tried dress number one on for the corpsman ball this summer because I loved it in the pictures.  Awful in person because my rear-end is not as skinny as the rest of me and it didn't fit right lol

What do you mean look like a house? I'm not saying you look overweight or anything but I'm sure people will know you're pregnant

I paid for my dress because my dad just got laid off around that time.

I was really glad I didn't spend $400 on my dress.  DH (then BF of course) wrecked his motorcycle and we didn't go because he was scooting around in a wheelchair due to broken limbs.
