This is going to be kind of a post and run, because I need to go to the gym and then go visit my adviser, but I thought you guys might like to know.
I just got a call from the graduate director of our program. Apparently, someone elsewhere in the university must have declined their fellowship, and I must have been first on the wait list, because suddenly, there's money for a second fellowship for our department next year! So she offered it to me and I accepted, and that means I'll be living with FI next year. Thanks so much to everyone who put up with my whining the past few weeks.... I feel like I'm on cloud nine now.
