Honeymoon - What's Your Details (Plan & Budget)

If you're taking a honeymoon (either right away or later), few questions for you:
  • where are you going?
  • why did you pick that location?
  • how long are you staying?
  • have you determined a budget?
  • what are you doing to save costs?
  • what are you most looking forward to during the HM?
okay, that's a lot of questions, but thought it'd be fun to see where and what everyone's going to be doing.

I'm getting HM fever and ready to take off now for some vacay!

Re: Honeymoon - What's Your Details (Plan & Budget)

  • I have a break from school the Monday and Tuesday after the wedding. So FI and I are going somewhere close, like Indy or Chicago then. Around Christmas/New Year's we are planning to go someplace tropical for about  a week. Right now we are looking at a couple of Sandals resorts in Jamaica. We like the idea that Sandals is adults only and all-inclusive. Plus about once a month, they have a great promotions. So I am checking their site every so often to find the best deal. Hope that helps.

  • We are getting married 10/13, not leaving until the following Sunday, 10/21 until 10/29 (8 days). We are going on a cruise to the Eastern Carribean, to save $ we are leaving out of NY, so we dont have to fly, just be dropped off by a lucky family member who will be oh so willing. We chose a cruise bc both of us have never been on one in the almost 7 years we have been together so we figured it would be something to try together, also FI is not the type to sit still, so I think he was more excited that we were not just going to a resort where he would have to watch me lay next to the pool and read all day/get a tan, lol. We didnt really have a budget but i wasnt ready to spend thousands of dollars to go somewhere and this ended up working out.
I really want to do some sort of excursion, but i want to go to the spa with or without FI=)
  • We're going to Sandals Grande Riviera in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.  FI really wanted to go to a Sandals resort, and after exploring the locations in St. Lucia and Antigua, realized that Jamaica would be our best bet cost wise.  Our travel agent led us to Sandals Grande Riviera, and I'm VERY happy with our decision.  We're getting married on Saturday 10/20, and will be leaving Monday morning 10/22, and staying 8 days/7 nights :)  We had determined a budget, and went over by a couple hundred, but I'm happy with our decision because neither of us have every been out of the country/to an all inclusive, so if there's a time to "go all out" our honeymoon is the best time I can think!  I'm most looking forward to being at an all inclusive resort where I dont have to worry about food, drinks, or ANYTHING.  I just want to lay by the pool and RELAX

  • We are getting married on Friday 10/19 and then due to flight schedules and a few other things, we will leave for our HM 2 weeks later on Saturday 11/3. We are staying for 10 days. We are going to stay at one of the Sandals resorts in St Lucia. I can't wait!! We didn't set a budget for the HM we priced out a few different places and then picked the one that suited us best! I don't really know what I'm looking forward to the most I think scuba diving!
  • We are taking a mini-moon in Asheville, NC. Due to our school schedules we don't get time off during the year (though my students often take a week off on a whim...). We are hoping to save up for a trip to Madrid in the future.

    • where are you going? P*nta Cana
    • why did you pick that location? FI wanted somewhere tropical, we both wanted somewhere with all inclusive, we went to Cancun, Mexico recently and wanted to try somewhere different.
    • how long are you staying? 6 days, 5 nights
    • have you determined a budget? We've already paid for half of it, we still owe around $870
    • what are you doing to save costs? All inclusive. I think it's the only way to go!
    • what are you most looking forward to during the HM? The beach, relaxing, unlimited drinks and food . . . I'm ready to go lol. Oh, and ziplining!!!!

We originally wanted to go to Ireland but the price of the flights was what it cost us for the cruise for a week. My FIL's gave us this cruise as our wedding gift. I can' wait to go!!

  • Where are you going? We are going to PuntaCana, Jamaica or Bahamas
Why did you pick that location?   We love the Caribbean.  We went to Jamaica last year and it was amazing.  We have both been to the Bahamas and really like it there too.  And PuntaCana has always been intriguing for us.
How long are you staying? 8 days, 7 nights
Have you determined a budget?  Yes, with everything including spending money we are looking at about $5,500.
What are you doing to save costs? Having my parents drive us to the airport.  Also if we stay at a Sandals, we will probably get upgraded since we are returning guests.
What are you most looking forward to during the HM?  Relaxing with my new husband.

    Where? Disney World, Fl

Why? I love Disney World. The last time we went was back in '09 when FI took me as a graduation from undergrad present. We had such a fantastic time and we've both been missing it.

How long? 8 days (But FI will technically be off for two weeks...we'll use part of that time to drive to the Northeast and visit family for the holidays since we'll be taking this trip in late December).

Budget? About $3500 not including airfare

Cost cutting? Not much, we choose a middle of the range hotel instead of a high end but we may spluge and upgrade since we haven't been away since that trip in 09.

Most looking forward to? Just going away together. Vacation time the past three years has been used to visit family since we live far from them. I can't wait to go away with it just being us.

  • We're going to a beautiful hotel/spa in New Hampshire for three nights. We didn't really decide on a budget before we started looking but we agreed this was financially do-able. We decided to go here because we don't fly and while we thought about doing a cruise it would have been very stressful to get to a port in time the day after the wedding and we wanted to truly relax. It will be around a three hour drive from our wedding hotel location to our HM location. I am most looking forward to some spa time and sleeping in late next to my husband!
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

  •     where are you going? Excellence Riviera Cancun in Mexico!
why did you pick that location? It came highly recommended, as did its sister resort nearby. And we wanted that area because it's close enough to stuff we can go out and see, like the Mayan ruins, but also a beautiful resort so we can sit on our butts with a cocktail and do nothing!
how long are you staying? six days, six nights
have you determined a budget? yes
what are you doing to save costs? not staying *that* long (although longer than other vacations are) and also said no to a lot of upgrade options that were offered. we also booked through Orbitz which is always good at a discount.
what are you most looking forward to during the HM? relaxing, beautiful weather, and my first trip to an all-inclusive!

  • We're getting married on a Friday (10/5) and leaving for a week long cruise to Bermuda that Sunday.
We're doing the same thing as mpjf1001 said and leaving out of New York so we don't have to spend more money on airfare.  We didn't really have a budget when we started out and we were willing to splurge a little because this will be our 1st vacation together but we got really good rates so I'm happy we're not spending a ton.

  • ***kallen1002- we booked through Carnival, the name of the ship is Miracle i think, what about you??
  • Where are you going?  Ireland! Flying in and out of Dublin and staying there for a few days but also traveling around the South-Western parts

Why did you pick that location? FI is Irish and has always wanted to go. It's also been on my "to visit" list for quite awhile and we found a great deal on our tickets.

How long are you staying? A week

Have you determined a budget? For the most part, yes

What are you doing to save costs? We're doing a four day bus tour instead of 6. The tour incluces the cost of accomodations, breakfasts and enterance fees so it's much cheaper then renting a car and driving ourselves.

What are you most looking forward to during the HM? Time alone with my new H after the hecticness of the last weeks leading up to the wedding, seeing the Cliffs of Moher, Blarney Castle and Dingle.

  • where are you going?
    Excellance Resort in Pvnta Cana!

why did you pick that location?
I told FI I wanted AI, and a beach.  Heard really good reviews about the resort from TK and a CW went there for his HM, so I'm always asking him my random questions.

    how long are you staying?
I'd really like 9-10 days since 2 days will be travel...

    have you determined a budget?
Yep, but thanks to the WAY bigger tax refund I feel better about upping it to 9-10 days.  3-4K

what are you doing to save costs?
We are going through AAA, parents will drive us to and from Airport and will be pup sitting.

what are you most looking forward to during the HM?
Alone time with FI... we don't get much.

  • where are you going?
We're going to Orlando, FL to visit Disney World, Universal Studios and Seaworld
why did you pick that location?
Many reasons. Disney because in 2013 they are opening Fantasyland which includes The Beast's Castle and the Be Our Guest Restaurant. My FI played The Beast in his high schools production of Beauty and the Beast and is REALLY excited about this. Plus, he's never been to Disney. We've been to Universal the last two years and we LOVE it. When we first went it was for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but we fell in love with the whole park that year. Seaworld because there used to be one very near us, but they closed it. We are very excited to see Shamu again.
    how long are you staying?
Between 8 and 10 days depending on what work allows.
    have you determined a budget?
    We're thinking about 3500-4000.
what are you doing to save costs?
We will be staying at one of Universal's resorts because they seem to be more reasonably priced than the Disney resorts. Which also gets us some great freebies in the process. Also, we have considered doing the HM registry for DIsney. Except I know it's frowned upon, and I have a problem with the fact that Disney will take a cut of whatever is given to us.
what are you most looking forward to during the HM?
I am most looking forward to relaxing and having a great time with my Husband. We will just have graduated college so it will be both a great graduation present to ourselves as well as a great late HM.

where are you going? We are going to travel around the East Coast of Canada. We're not going until summer 2013 since I'm in school still and I cannot take time off from that.why did you pick that location? FI hates anywhere warm and he does not have  a passport (that could easily be remedied but he chooses not to). Also I have a ton of family down east and my uncle is head of tourism PEIhow long are you staying? We'll probably go for 2 weekshave you determined a budget? 4,000what are you doing to save costs? Staying in bed and breakfasts or with family, renting a car instead of flying, finding groupon or livingsocial/groupon deals since they are touristy areaswhat are you most looking forward to during the HM? Travelling with FI. We've never been anywhere just the two of us.

    • where are you going?
    • We are going to El Dorado Seaside in Riviera Maya
    • why did you pick that location?
    • We wanted a beach, all inclusive, adults only resort that was not that big.  Most resorts are 400+ rooms, this one only has 200 or so.  It will be much more intimate and secluded.
    • how long are you staying?
    • 5 nights/6 days
    • have you determined a budget?
    • Yes, and since it's all inclusive and we aren't planning on doing a lot of excursions, we will be able to stick to our budget of $3500.
    • what are you doing to save costs?
    • The all inclusive is saving us a lot.  We plan on just relaxing on the beach and only doing one or two excrusions.
    • what are you most looking forward to during the HM?
    • The relaxation!  Also, alone time and romance with my future husband!

FYI - With the Disney HM registry they don't take a cut...you just need to apply it all to Disney purchases (park tickets, food, souveniours, on property spa, hotel, activities, tours, etc...)

Really? Well that's good to know. I read on the Etiquette Board tthat they did. Sometimes those ladies can be a little snobbish and they were not keen on the idea of a honeymoon registry. Anyway, Thanks for letting me know!

We're going to Secrets Maroma Beach for 5 days. I really wanted somewhere tropical, but I'm horrified of flying, and flying to Mexico is shorter. We chose the resort because it's all inclusive, adults only and we're getting a swim out room. I actually booked at the other Secrets resorts first, but read about their crappy beaches, so I kept having to change. We overshot our budget by about $1,000...but it'll be worth it! ETA: We're leaving the day after the wedding. We're only doing 5 days because FI's vacation is unpaid and he could get in trouble for taking longer.

    • where are you going? PuntaCana, Dominican Republic
    • why did you pick that location? It was exciting and out of the norm for us. We loved Cancun when we went, and wanted to stay tropical/warm/beachy.
    • how long are you staying? 8 days, 7 nights
    • have you determined a budget? Yes, the trip and airfare were $2,814.
    • what are you doing to save costs? We booked through www.cheapcaribbean.com, which has very reasonable packages to great, highly rated all-inclusive resorts. They also include airfare, which helps a ton.
    • what are you most looking forward to during the HM? Aside from relaxing on Bavaro Beach, we booked two excursions. One is a historical tour on Santo Domingo, including lots of colonial sights and the markets, and the other is an ecological trip into caves and horseback riding.
  • kallen-thats crazy!! what a small world! ive already met one other knottie on this board, wouldnt it be great to be another=)
  • The FI and I decided we wanted to go to the Caribbean for our honeymoon, but since October is still in hurricane season, we decided to go to St. Lucia's Sandals Grande Resort because it's kind of low in the typical hurricane track. We set our budget for around $5k, but we spent a little bit more because we're flying down to Miami the morning after the wedding and spending the night there so we wouldn't have to wake up at an ungodly hour of the morning after the wedding. We're staying in St. Lucia 6 nights (would have been 7, but I wasn't waking up at 4 am the morning after the wedding!!)
I was originally looking at the vacation packages through Costco, but my FI wanted to work through a travel agent, so that's the route we went.
We're excited that it's adults only and that it's all-inclusive! We both really excited about snorkling and exploring the island :)
