NWR: Need help, please offer apartment recs

My fiance and I are moving to Milwaukee after the wedding, and we are looking for apartments but we don't really know what to look for or where to look. We are looking to stay under $1400 a month (hopefully with some utilities included) and we want something that allows small dogs in case we ever want to get one.

Can anyone help me out?

Do you want (or need) to live in the city limits or by anything particular?

We don't really know what the area has to offer, but we would like to be somewhere with a fairly young population (but not a lot of young rowdy college students) and with a decent amount of things to do.

I personally wouldn't mind living in the city if we found a decent place, but like I said, we are not sure what we are doing.

There are some great neighborhoods in the city.  My two favorite are Washington Heights (west side) and Bayview (just south of downtown).  Both have older homes (lots of duplexes) with character and you have a better chance of finding a dog-friendly landlord in a duplex than in an apartment building.  You should be able to come in under $1000 a month, utilities not included.  The East Side (north of downtown) is great, but parking is a pain.  I like Wauwatosa (aka Tosa), too.

Do you know where job(s) will be located?  The area is kind of spread out but commute times are pretty reasonable.

I live in the East part of Wauwatosa, and love it. i'm in walking distance to some great restaurants, coffee places, a gelato place, and the downtown Tosa area. I'm in a duplex (there are tons of options) and have a dog. Having the pet limits your options, but there are still plenty!

Lyra - we must live near each other!  I am in MKE and also within walking distance to that gelatto place - LOVE the area!

I haven't lived in the city yet, but I am in the suburbs now.  My first thoughts for you were Bay View, East Side, or Riverwest.  You sometimes have to be careful in Riverwest due to crime, but overall it is still safe.  Your budget is very reasonable.

do you need parking? if so, how many spots? this is a big factor to consider. There is very little chance of getting 2 parking spots downtown (and if you do it will cost you) and even in some of the surrounding areas parking comes at a premium.

Good question jonesma!  Parking is definatly something to consider.  That's park of what is keeping us in the suburbs.

Depending on what you are looking for, Greendale is an EXCELLENT area.  It is quiet and homey, but close to anything you need in Milwaukee.  Excellent schools too if you are thinking of staying there a long time.

I would highly reccommend Bay View! It is a great neigborhood, young crowd, inexpensive, VERY dog friendly! There is plenty of places to walk to, and always something to do! Tons of cute old duplexes as well as apartments above shops. Right on the lake and has several parks.

HI, I don't actually live in the city, but I live in Grafton in the Arrowhead apartments... Grafton is only about 10 minutes north of the city and is a really nice town... Arrowhead apartments is pretty close to the interstate and allow any size pets. You have 2 options with these apts, you can rent month to month or sign a lease... month to month, with a pet is 850/mnth and you pay electric and water. Its really not bad. Electric runs us about 150 a month and water runs us 150 every 3 months, if I remember right. We have a 2 bed, 2 bath and 1 car garage.... There is also an apt community pool... but we're also only about 5 miles from Port Washington, where there is a really nice beach right on the lake. As far as the "young crowd" goes, I'm not really sure... I've only lived here since Feb and haven't really gotten to know anyone but it seems that most of the people here are younger couples. I really like it here...

I live downtown on the eastside and LOVE it.  My fiance and live in a new apartment (just built last October).  It is a 1 bed apartment with one parking spot included, water/trash removal included, washer and dryer for $1250.  The apartment is also pet friendly with no weight restrictions.  I live on the 2nd floor and have no complaints about noise.  This area is within walking distance to soooo many restaurants, bars, shopping, and very close to the lake.  It is a younger crowd, but not too close to UWM where it is a bunch of college students.  It is also close to Brady St. which is also an AWESOME area.

Send me a PM if you want to know the exact name of the place :)

    Hope that helps!
