Movies & Books

Please recommend any good ones! I just finished reading "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed (which was really, really, good - I'd recommend it to anyone), and I'm in desperate need of new books to download. I prefer novels and memoirs. Any ideas?

Also, BF and I need some new movies to watch. What are some of the best movies you've seen lately?

We only watch bad movies, or at least that seems the case lately. My recommendation is to avoid basing your film choices entirely on the recommendations of a hippie nudist with a wicked beard and Buddy Holly glasses who is from Portland.

  • Hmmmm.... I know I watched "The Switch" last week and it was shitty as hell, but I couldn't stop watching. I love Jennifer Anniston.

I really want to see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. It looks amazing and I haven't heard bad things about it.

I can't remember the last book I read for fun... Gods in Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson was good. It's chick lit, so I'm not sure how you feel about it, but really developed characters. Elle recommended it to me and I enjoyed it.

  • I love chick lit when it's written well. For instance, any of the books by Emily Giffin. Lately I find myself going back and forth between more serious books and chick lit. I'll definitely check out Gods In Alabama!

  • Wild's on my "wish list" on my Nook!!!  I'm abnormally excited when people recommend books I was already planning on reading.

I'm currently reading A Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling and I think it is pretty boring.  I'm disappointed.  The characters seem either not developed enough or two complicated for their relatively small roles in the book.  I was probably setting myself up for failure expecting characters I'd love.

I want to read Les Mis but it's like 9000 pages long so that's hurting its chances.

We just rented Hotel Transylvania from Redbox and we both enjoyed it a lot.  Granted, it WAS the day we got engaged so we were pretty in good moods, but it was funny.

<div>It was SO good. It was really moving and beautifully written (it made me cry more than once), but it's also exciting and keeps you turning the pages. I read "Tiny Beautiful Things" over my vacation last month. That book is a collection of the advice colums she wrote for a magazine (or website, I can't remember). I didn't love that one just because I like getting involved in longer stories, and these were each just 5-10 page letters, but I kept thinking "She's such a great writer, I need to see what else she's written."</div><div>
</div><div>I'm actually jealous that you haven't read it yet but are going to - I was so sad to have finished it the other night! </div>

  • I read Gone Girl last week.   It kept me up way too late one night because I had to see what was going to happen.

I'm in search of something new at the moment.  I've downloaded a couple on my Nook, but I just can't seem to get into them.  I might check out some of these.

I just downloaded "A Dog's Purpose" which was recommended on another board. It looks good.

  • I haven't watched any good movies lately.  Most of the movies in my netflix queue has been pretty awful.  I am currently reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King I'm 30% of the way through and it's pretty slow going.  I'm not giving up on it yet though. On my to read list Atonement, Casual Vacany, and Gone Girl.

  • I liked Atonement.  I'm about to read We need to Talk about Kevin, which looks really dark but it might be good.  I'll report back.

Blue- You should read Les Mis.  It's so worth it.  You just have to get past the first 200 pages.

  • I just started, and have almost finished, Silver Linings Playbook by mark? Quick. It is VERY good and I would highly recommend it. His writing style is very similar to the author who wrote The Curious Case of the Dog in the Night, which I also recommend. And the book Room, but I can't remember the author's name for either of those books.

  • I just watched Moonrise Kingdom and 5 year Engagement, recommend both. My mom just told me to read Jennifer Weiner's new book. She said it was pretty good.

I own the book Atonement and keep meaning to read it. I love the movie but I cry every time.

The Book Theif. You must read The Book Theif.

It's YA, but doesn't read like it. Super intense and one of my favorite books.

  • I dowloaded The Book Theif! I've heard really good things about it too. I'll put Silver Linings Playbook on my list as well.

I need to finish Moonrise Kingdom - I started watching ti when I was too tired one night and only made it halfway through, but it was good up to that point at least.

Do not give up on it!!!!  I read it, my first Stephen King book ever that I've read and it was pretty good albeit slow moving sometimes.

Hummingbird-I'm currently reading "What Remains" by Carole Radizwill.  She was on RHONY and the book is about her husband's battle with cancer as well as her friendships with John Kennedy Jr. (her husband's cousin) and his wife Carolyn the summer of their deaths.  It's good, I'm almost done, I know I'm going to cry.  I am so behind on my reading before that I finished the 50 shades series so yeah, I'm reallly behind.  I'm going to take some of these recommendations though and put them on the ipad.

  • Ok I have an AMAZING book to recommend but it is YA. But it doesn't feel like YA, no matter how old you are, you will love this book!

It's called Unwind by Neal Shusterman. Perfect for those of you like dystopian, science fiction novels. But it's not TOO heavy on the science fiction if you're a little leery. It's set in the future but not too far. There's a scene in the book where the characters visit an antique shop and the shop has iPods! One of the characters mention "Oh yeah, my grandfather had an iPod." Lol, that scene just cracks me up.

Anyway, I don't want to describe the plot because I might spoil it but y'all should check it out! It's so amazing, dear god, I could not put it down. And after I read it, it stayed with me and made me really think about society and our future.

Please, someone read it so we can discuss it! :)

Oh yeah, you should definitely finish the book! There's a scene in there that is so chilling and horrifying and the crazy thing is, it's not even gory or anything. It's unreal how amazing this book is.

Are you sure it's 1000 years in the future? Not sure if you meant to type 100 years or not.

And yep, it is about abortion and the government's way of getting around it. In the future, there is actually a real, full-fledged war over the abortion issue and the government comes up with a way to sort of keep both sides happy. It's messed up. But the book is so good, omg. Now I feel the urge to re-read it...lol!
