Name Change

I really didn't know where to put this so I'm just posting it on the Vegas board lol. Anyhow, have any of you changed your name through The Nest's name change service? https://www.missnowmrs.com/theknot/default.aspx

I found out about it through pinterest but I haven't heard of many people who have actually used it. I'm probably going to hold off on changing my name until after we move becasue we're moving from CA to KY and we already bought our tickets and it's still under my current last name.

I guess my question is, how reliable is this and how long does it usually take? When did you start the name change process?

I'm not really looking forward to this part haha.

Re: Name Change

  • cant help you on the name change thing.  when are you moving to KY.  im moving from cali to GA in feb
  • oo wow right before thanksgiving.  im driving my stuff back east in a jeep lol with a bunny and a pit :)
  • Petit- I can't speak out of personal experience, but I had a friend who used the service. She said it helped in organizing what needs to be done, but unfortunately some of the work still had to be done by her. For instance, the Social Security office still requires YOU to be the one changing your name, the service just provides you with the needed form.
  • Ahh I see, alright thanks! :)
  • i think you also have to go to the DMV as well

It's really not that hard.  Depending on the state, you either have to go to the SS office or the DMV first.  I had to go to the DMV, since the marriage certificate did not have my new name on it.  So I went to the dmv, after I got my license, I then went to the social security office and changed it there.

Then I went to my bank, and called my credit card company.  Then other things I changed as I got the bills.  My passport, I just went and got a new picture taken at Sams club, filled out the paper work online, then mailed it in.

Save your money and do it yourself.  Also I don't know about you, but I would not feel comfortable giving a service like that all my information.... I have no idea what they might do with it, or what kind of security they have in place.  Just my opinion though.

Oh and I'd definitely wait to change your name until you move, that way you don't have to pay to get a new drivers license twice :)

  • Ah yeah that's true about the security issue. So when we go to pickup the marriage certificate they put the maiden name on it or will they put the new name on it even if you haven't changed your name yet?

The marriage certificate only has your maiden name on it.  So that was why when I went to the social security office, they wouldn't let me get a new social security card until I had something that had my new name on it.  I guess in Minnesota the marriage license/certificate has what you want your name to be on it after.  So my friends that I had talked to had all told me to go there first, which obviously was a waste.  Anyways I guess what I'm saying is that every state is different.

  • I live in NM and just went to SS to start it.  Here I didn't have to go to the MVD first.

We are taking a trip at Thanksgiving and the SS lady told me to wait to change my DL so it matched the ticket that is in my maiden name.

They told me 2 weeks or less to get the new SS card.  I just had to tell her what my new name would be, show the form (you can download from tthe SS office website), and ID.  It took less than 25 min and that included waiting in line.
