Which Theme? Offbeat or Classical? (kind of long) With Poll

OK - so FI and I have narrowed our ideas for themes down to 2 finalists.  I am totally on the fence about which one to do.  The wedding is on 11/5/11. It will be very small, only around 75 people. Its an evening wedding with only 3 attendants (MOH and 2 BMs).  Here are the ideas:

Nero Wolfe Theme - Rext Stout's famous NYC detective. We would have silk orchids at each table with a copy of a Nero Wolfe book. A framed quote from that book and a couple of props that fit into the mystery. The cake would have orchids on it, as that is Nero Wolfe's passion. Each table would either be named for a character or by a name of a story. And we would put a still shot from a scene from the A&E TV series too.  The main color would be a golden yellow, Nero's signature color.  We both loved the TV show and I have almost all the books, so it fits in with us. I could even tie in our wedding clothes to the era of the TV show, which was the 1950s.

Autumn Theme - Very traditional.  Wheat and fall leaves. Bright fall colors. Acorns, apples or something like that. Maybe a basked of apples at each table surrounded by leaves and acorns. Each table could be named after an apple (Macintosh, Lady Gala, Golden Delicious, etc). The cake would tie into that as well.

I love both ideas, offbeat and classic. I know most people wouldn't really get the Nero Wolfe theme, but that doesn't bother me. I could put clips on our wedding site and it could be a converstation starter. I know the fall theme would look great at the venue.  But would the Nero Wolfe Theme look strange there?  Would I look dumb in a 1950s era gown? Should we stick to classical becuase it fits with the venue?  i don't want to do something that wouldn't look right in the venue no matter how neat the idea is.

Below are some pictures of the place and a poll.  Thanks for any input, I really want to make the choice asap.

Have a wedding that reflects you.  If you're classical-type people, go with that.  If you live and breathe Nero Wolfe and it's part of who you are, go with that.  Or you could do a mixture of the two: do apples and fall colors along with your orchids and vintage attire, or go classic with your attire and have the fun and funky centerpieces, or however you want to combine them.  Our wedding incorporated elements of '30s Hollywood, Victorian England, Disney, Final Fantasy, Robin McKinley, the Foo Fighters, Shakespeare, '80s one-hit wonders...  I know I'm leaving stuff out.

Point is, theme weddings are great, but a great wedding doesn't need a theme.  Your guests only care about good food, good booze, and good music; the details are for you and you alone, so go with ones that make you happy, regardless of how well you think they "fit."
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I agree with PP, I don't like themes, I think you should stick to color scheme. For your venue, I think neutral colors look best. I can see brown/green or champagne colors on tables.
  • I think they both sound cute!! The fall one has been used, so if you want to make it personal then go with the Detective one!
  • Ok so call us silly but my fiance and I love the Oakland Raiders football team. So.........our wedding is going to be Raiders themed. Our wedding rings even say Raiders on them. Our reception is going to be the same way.
All in all, I say do what ever theme you want to do and have fun with it. This is the one day when the world really does revolve around you (and your hubby of course).
Have fun with the day. I once heard from Racheal Ray (the cook on t.v.) that she would rather have things like pigs in a blanket and cheese trays then all those crazy french foods at her party because if you have uptight food you get uptight people. She would rather people have fun food because that made for a fun time. People are not afraid to laugh when there is fun food around.
I am sure that you will be a beautiful (no i am not hitting on you, LOL) bride and have the best day of your life no matter what theme you choose.
Good luck and may you and your future hubby live happily ever after.

  • Thanks Amber, that was very sweet. I am sure that your day will be just as wonderful and I think your theme is a great idea.
