When to mail save the dates?

How far in advance should you mail save the dates? Our wedding is May 2012. We have a lot of out of town guests so I wanted to do it soon - but there are SO many cute STD's online that include pics of the couple on them. We aren't having our engagement pictures taken until September so I was thinking of holding off until then. I thought in the meantime, I would make a wedding website and send out an e-mail w/the date.... Do you think Sept is too long to wait? It still gives guests about 7-8 months notice.

    I am planning on doing around 9 months. I almost have them ready but they may not get out until around 8 months. All of FI's guests are OOT. I think 8 months will be fine.

    I think 7-8 months notice is perfectly fine.  My FI and I had our engagement pictures done in September and then sent our save the dates this past Thanksgiving weekend and our wedding is July 23, so our OOT guests knew 7-8  months in advance.

    I feel like most people already know the date by word of mouth. I just want to be sure to give plenty of notice since none of my family is in Philly.

    The only thing I'm worried about is that my FMIL may have a shower around the Fall. Would it matter if shower invites go out before STD's? Hmm..

    I am also getting married in May of 2012.  We are doing our engagement pics this month, but I plan on waiting until Sept. or Oct. to mail STD's.  I agree 7-8 months is plenty of notice.

    Since I have a lot of OOT family Ill will probably send around 9, but in all honesty that could change to 8 or  even 7 depending on grad school...Ill be studnet teaching by then...

    Engagement pictures are being done late summer/early fall

    Okay good - glad to hear others will be sending theirs out around that time. Makes me feel better.

    Cait - Where do you go to grad school? I'm also in education - will start student teaching next January. Ahh. Good luck!

    I don't have many OOT guests, so I was planning on sending mine out about 6 months before --- does that sound about right?

    I'd do it in November so it doesn't get lost in the Christmas mail...

    I did mine about 6 months out, but I had very few out-of-towners. I'd say around around 8 months out is probably a good idea as PP said.

    We're getting married in May 2012 too! But i already sent out the magnets last month. We had our engagement pictures done in March. I have a lot of guests coming from Germany, so wanted to make sure, they can save money and vacation days to fly over here.

    I was married last weekend and we sent ours out last June for our overseas guests.  However this is NOT the norm, usually it's 6 months.
