Who to serve my food?

My mom and I are dead set on cooking the food for my wedding that is less than 6 months away.  It's cheaper and more delicious than most other options.  Any ideas on where/how to hire services for heating and keeping the buffet filled?  I also want to use these people to  break down decorations and load them in my friends and family's cars. Most caterers don't want to because of liability.  Any ideas would be great!  Thanks, Tiffany

Re: Who to serve my food?

  • I have 3 married DD's.  For two of their weddings I hired some cheerleaders from a local high school to help with tear down and clean up.  My sister-in-law is the coach and it was agreed that what they were paid would go directly to their cheerleading camp account.

You could look into something like that, an older church youth group, etc to help you.  Good luck in your search.
  • This is kind of a tough one, as food safety is not something to mess with. Just a few degrees off on temperature (hot or cold) and you can get a lot of people sick, quick. E.coli, salmonella and the like are not fun.

The group you choose would need to have been trained in food temperature and serving techniques. You may find a local church group that can.

Have you asked your venue for recommendations, or if the venue itself has requirements for food safety for liability reasons?

In terms of breaking down decorations, I like pp's suggestion of getting a local high school team, drama club, etc, who could use the money towards their fundraisers.
  • If there's a culinary school or culinary program at a local high school/community college near you, you can contact them and see if they'd be interested. Their students won't be doing much actual cooking, but they would have the experience of serving at a large event. And for a few bucks, there are worse things you can do for a few hours!

I would absolutely recommend getting an insurance policy, though, which will cover people if they burn themselves or get injured while serving food or breaking down decorations.

  • Some of oue local catering companies and temp agencies hire out bartenders and servers with food handlers cards or liquors permits, some of them have ads on Craiglist under "events". My cousin works in a large chain restaurant and is asking his coworkers if they want to work for a few hours for us for extra $.
  • Always remember girl scouts and boy scouts.  They always come through in a pinch.
  • we are hiring a culinary student.  Told her to hire three of her trusted fellow students.
