Need help with my card box/basket

I found this duck-shaped basket at an antique store for $2.50! I know it's weird, but I thought it was going to be the perfect card basket for us because 1. We're having an outdoor creekside wedding (there are always ducks there), 2. It's already blue to fit our orange and blue theme 3. Fiance and I have an inside joke about ducks 4. It was only $2.50! All I'd have to do is make a banner that says "CARDS" around its neck.

The more I saw other card boxes, the more I saw ones that can be closed. Now I'm a tiny bit worried about losing a card or two...should I be? Has anyone ever heard of anyone losing cards?

Alternative to card basket:
1. pretty wire birdcage at Michaels that is 40% so it would be like $15.
2. Other suggestions?

I won't be using the basket otherwise because I'm not having programs and I'm probably using ribbon wands for my ceremony exit which I was just going to place on the end chairs.

Can you think of any other use for the basket?

  • That basket is super cute, but I would be worried about the same thing.  If you can, I'd get one that can be kept closed.

As for this basket - are you doing bathroom baskets?  This might be a cute way to use it?

You could also maybe put a plant or some hydrangea in there and have it as a centerpiece by your guest book or escort cards.

  • PP must be sharing a brain with me tonight b/c I also thought it would be a great bathroom basket.

I don't like to think that guests would help themselves to the card basket, but it's happened before so closed options are just better IMO.

  • I think it would be cute near the guest book!  What a great lil basket!

I love ducks (my first word was quack!), and I think that is seriously the cutest thing ever!!

I would definitely find a use for it because it sounds like it NEEDS to be in your reception somewhere! It would be a cute bathroom basket but it seems a shame to hide it away in a bathroom. I like the idea of putting a small plant or flowers in it and putting it by your guestbook.

EDIT: Just saw on the DIY board about "Tears of Joy" packets (tissue packets). This could be a possible use for your awesome duck!

  • We're struggling with the same thing- putting a lid on the card basket.  We're using a old wine crate as our card box, so the groom-to-be is currently trying to construct a lid for the crate with an opening to drop the cards in.  Groom-to-be + power tools has me quite nervous!  :)

Are you have favors at the wedding?  Could you use the basket to hold favors for the guests to take?

  • I agree to defintiely use it in some way!  I don't know if you're doing a traditional guest book but I'm thinking of doing something like "advice to the newly weds" and in that case you can have people write their advice and put the slips of paper in the basket?  Or candy? other favors?  programs at ceremony? Use it! :)
  • Thanks for the advice guys! I'm visiting my venue again this weekend so I'll see what else I can do with it. I think I'll go ahead and get a nice birdcage cause that'll still kind of go with the wooded ceremony.
