I was outside the recommended age group (boo) but I would have gotten it in a heartbeat.

My sister hasn't gotten it yet for my 10-year-old niece and I have to bite my tongue to keep from telling her my opinion on the matter.
  • Doesn't it only prevent 2 types?  I don't remember, it was awhile ago I had this conversation with my Dr.

Also, I've heard it hurts like a bitch.
  • Wow, that's interesting.  I never got it and most people my age didn't (they could have).  I didn't get mine because by the time it came out I was already practically engaged to Andy so I wasn't worried.

My cousin wouldn't let his daughters get it because he's worried it would make them think they can have sex willy nilly.  Right.  Good thing one of his daughters is moving to France for 6 months next year.  Good luck with keeping her in check.

Yes, and I had to sit in the waiting room 20 minutes after each shot to make sure I didn't have a reaction to it. Shouldn't things like that be figured out before items come out on the market? Under my parent's insurance, the shots were free because it was considered "preventative" like mammograms and prostate screenings.
  • Sara - RE breakfast.  No, it does not make you a bad mother.  It's available so you take up the offer.  It's the "You have to provide it" attitude that rubs me wrong.  For example, our buses arrive anywhere betwen 9 and 9:25.  First bell is at 9:25.  Breakfast line closes at 9:15 so that whomever is already in line can get served and still be on time to class.  We have had kids and parents pitch royal fits about it.  Well, what do you want? Free transportation or free breakfast?  Plus, IMO, kids who've been awake since 6:30/7 to get ready and catch the bus for a 45 minute route shouldve' eaten breakfast way before 9:00 anyway.

When I used to get allergy shots I had to wait 20 min to see if I reacted too.  I don't think it's really a bad thing or even dangerous (in that sense).

  • Speaking of the Gardisil shot. What worries me most is women don't really understand their risk of being exposed to the HPV virus... if you've ever had an irregular pap test you've probably had HPV.  Few know you can get it even if you use condoms That's kinda scary

Or how fast they can pass it to others.  I have a friend who is usually very smart but she was angry at a girl we knew for (accidentally) giving a guy herpes.  I pointed out to her that she has also had unprotected sex and that she passed her HPV to the several guys she has slept with since.  She responded with "But it doesn't hurt guys."  Right.  I informed her that it is very unlikely that she was the last girl any of those guys would sleep with and that they will all presumably have unprotected sex with a wife someday, therefore she gave it to all those women.  That literally never dawned on her.

Actually, I chose to talk about the general healthcare bill, along with a specific clause that deals directly with children....diff topic sorry...thought you could handle it!  WTF

    and to stay on subject...
NC will pay for your gardasil shot (if you have a state ins {medicaid, health choice, etc}), it is considered a state vaccine, however our schools do not mandate that you have it.

    In response to someones post:
They have you wait 20 min because sometimes the vaccine can lower your blood pressure temporarily and they don't want (can't afford) for you to pass out.  There are rare other side effects of course though.
