Who do I ask to set up for my reception?!

Help! I really can't decide if I need to hire a day-of wedding planner. I have the reception venue and most of my vendors figured out. My wedding will be in Houston. My wedding (at a church) starts at 4 and my reception starts at 6 (at a different location). The venue allows three hours of set-up time, meaning I will barely have any time to set up the table cloths and centerpieces because I along with all bridesmaids/family members will be getting ready. The wedding planners that I've checked out so far don't seem to actually set up for the wedding, but that's all that I need. Is there anyone that specializes in simply setting up prior to a reception?

  • A DOC would do it.  Also, check with the venue.  They may be willing to do it, even if they do charge extra.

You could also try hiring a non-professional, like a friend's sister or another bride from your local to do it.
  • You may check with your caterer as well. Depending on how extensive your decor is... They will typically do some minimal set up for a small fee.

  • Check with your caterer.  My caterer sets up all the tables, decorations on tables, etc.  I will have minimal to do to get ready

  • Thank you for all the advice ladies! I've emailed a few day-of consultants and emailed my caterer to see exactly what they will set up. Now just waiting to hear back. Thanks again!
  • ask if the venue has someone that can do it for you tht you can hire.

That is an amazing idea! I also have been dreading the wedding day set up plan, and I really want to use this idea!

  • I posted on facebook "does anyone have a friend/coworker/sister/brother/cousin that you trust and that is responsible and might want to make some extra cash?

I got a few responses, and ended up going with two people recommended by a good friend, who I trust.  I'm paying them $20.00 an hour, and they are going to do all of the setup.  They are also staying for the reception to make sure that things flow smootlhy and be available for anything we might need. One is going to serve the wine/beer and the other is going to pretty much be a floater person.  Since I'm paying them $20.00 an hour, its costing me less than $400.00 for two people for the setup and reception time.
  • I am thinking about this as well. I have about 5 hours to set up the reception and I am going over my options. I think I can do it (in a hour) with some help but how stressful will it be for me? I would love to get in there and get it done early so I will see how that goes. I will iron out the details closer to the wedding. I have my florist who can set up the centerpieces for me for an extra charge.

The caterer I am looking at provides linens but then don't get to the venue until an hour before start time so I'd have to see if she would let me have the linens a few days early so I can have those set up but I don't even know how to do that. Or coordinate so the florist and the caterer get to the venue at the same time and set up together BUT I have huge control issues and want to be involved somehow so it looks how I want it to. Ugh!
