Minnesota-Minneapolis and St. Paul

Need Help with a few vendors, please!

I am very slowly getting things done--meanwhile, my inlaws are still trying to talk us into eloping and inviting everyone from work!  I have not had a whole lot of help or support from them and it is really starting to bug me!  Anyway, on a separate matter--here are two things I feel like I should try to get done this week:
1.  DJ--does anyone have preferences, Midwest Sound vs. Neon Express (Music in Motion gave me the highest quote).  If so, do you have a specific DJ and do you suggest that I meet with them to determine who should be DJing?
2.  Cake--do I need to get this done soon?  My mom is going to be here the end of October.  Don't you think that I can still find a cake decorator that is still available?
3.  Florists--has anyone used Scarlett Lily--I thought she was very nice.

Thanks!

    1. I booked with Neon Express. Their prices are unbeatable and they had so many glowing recommendations. They seem very down-to-earth and like they really enjoy DJ-ing (it is just a side job for them so it is fun :)

    2. My friend is making my cake so I can't really help you out with this one. However I am going to be getting my sheet cake from Costco or Sam's club most likely. I should probably start looking into that lol

    3. I have never heard of her so can't help you there. I am using my mom's company, Forget-Me-Not Floral Events which is saving me a bundle :)

Sorry I can't help you out with much of this (We using a DJ employed by our venue and we haven't looked into cake yet.  But I met with Lacey from Intuitive Blooms today and she is awesome, highly recommend her.

    1. We're probably going with Neon; they're just too damn cheap to choose anyone else.  SuperRN- did you know they're only $250 for PEC? That's less than the in-house DJ!

    2. We're doing Penny Steele, and I'm so excited.  I think you'll still be fine for a May wedding next month?

    3. Never heard of her.  We're using Molly from Petals and Sprigs and Twigs, and she gave us a really reasonable quote.

    1. DJ: I booked with Midwest Sound.  I was in contact with Instant Request but was not impressed with them (not returning calls, mailings were never received).  We met with Midwest Sound and loved them!  And we were able to negotiate our price substantially from what the initial quote was.  Not as cheap as Neon Express, but Midwest is very highly recommended by many MSP brides.  I highly recommend meeting with any vendor you are interested in--websites can show you a lot, but actually taking to people shows a lot more and helps make better-informed decisions!

    2. Cake:  Buttercream is the preferred vendor for my reception venue, and I had no arguements there!  Unbelievable cake!  I think you should be able to still book a cake vendor in Oct.  The next MSP bridal fair is Oct. 24 I think, and you'll see lots of options!

    3. Florists:  I booked with Jeni from Simply Stated Elegance, who I found through reading the bios of other MSP brides.  She is VERY affordable, and really works within your budget.  I went to three consultations, because I wanted to see what my pricing options were.  Plus you get to go to the flower warehouse to see how your flowers will look before she starts to make your arrangements!

Good luck with all your planning!  Use this site and the ladies on it!  They're such a huge help and I've made so many of my decisions from their advice!

    1. The thing with it being a side job at Neon Express is really nice since it keeps the cost way down. But with Midwest Sound being a bigger company, they've got a lot of extra resources (equipment, people, etc.) to use for back-up in case anything happens. They've also been in business forever and have a good relationship w/a lot venues in town. *For the sake of full disclosure, I used to DJ for them and still know a lot of the people there. Feel free to PM me any questions you have, I'll answer them honestly.

    2. It wouldn't hurt to at least book your date now. I went with cheesecake from Muddy Paws, so I'm not really sure about the process of booking a "real" cake.

    3. I did silk flowers from Michael's, so I'm no help w/florists.

    HTH!

FYI, we were NOT thrilled with Neon as our DJ. I'm still working on my vendor reviews, but long story short, all the songs kept skipping ALL NIGHT, and at one point the DJ's system went out for FIVE MINUTES. It was embarassing.

We are using Midwest too. We looked at Neon, but I've heard horror stories of brides who used smaller companies, due to a lack of back-up. Sure the price is good, but I'd rather pay a little more to get a comapny with an actual office, and full time employees.

As for other vendors, we are having our wedding about 2 hours west of the cities, so we are using locals for flowers and cake.

I went to a wedding this weekend and their cake was from: http://www.farmingtonbakery.net/

I am not really a cake person, but OMGoodness it was good! I have no idea how they were to work with or cost, but from a guests perspective it was AMAZING

For my DJ I went with Complete Music. They were pretty good; $499 for 6 hours.

    For cake I used Costco.

I made my own artificial bouquets.

Buttercream for a cake, hands down! Every guest said it was the best cake they had ever had! Unless you are dying to have fondant..which I was but after trying Buttercream, changed my mind. We had a 3-tier cake with ribbon around it and crystals hanging from each tier. Gorgeous and tasty!
