I don't like my wedding dress anymore :( Need Opinions!

I bought my dress right after I got engaged over a year ago, and I kind of bought it on a whim, I only tried on 8 different dresses and I feel like I was kind of pushed into the sale because it was on sale.  I bought the dress for 400 dollars, but when the dress came in I still loved it, this past week, my mom and I decided to go back to the wedding shop and try it on again.  She took a picture from far away this time, and I hate it, it looses all the detail and it looks like a big poof at the top.  Lets face it all of my wedding dress pictures will be from far away.  I don't want to look at my pictures and keep thinking about the big poof at the top.  I don't think there is anything else I can do to alter the top of it(the flower poof at the top).  I am not very big chested, and I feel the flowers make me look like I have fake boobs.  Would I still be able to get a new wedding dress in time?

Re: I don't like my wedding dress anymore :( Need Opinions!

  • P.S. I also don't know if I want to be lugging such a huge dress around all night :(
  • A lot of girls are just getting around to ordering their dresses now :) You'll be fine to order one. Maybe you can get someone to buy this dress and recoup money that way :) Try the Wedding Classifieds board!
  • You have time - I wouldn't wait too much longer but you could definitely still get a dif dress. If you're not happy, and can spare the $400, get yourself something you ADORE!!

  • I think the detailing is gorgeous close up, but if you aren't happy with it and have the money, then go for it.

  • Money really is no object, and I would rather have a dress I love than an ok dress.  I originally had 1000 dollar wedding budget so I would think I could find a dress for 600 if not I can always get rid of my chair covers I was going to spend another 1600 dollars on.  I can always try and sell the other one too!
  • i know they say you have to feel a certain way in your wedding dress just to sell it to you, but i really believe that if you don't atleast go try on some other dresses, you will spend your wedding wondering "what if" and you will look back on your pictures with the same mentality. it can't hurt to go try some dresses on. i'm sure you can get your dress in time. when i ordered mine about a month ago, they said it would take 5-6 months to come in, so that's still plenty of time for you.
    Happily married since 9/1/2012!

  • I have to agree with PP's. If you are in doubt and are not worried about the money, at least go try on other gowns. You may end up going back to your old one. Even if you don't, you can always try and sell it or even donate it. $400 isn't all that much in the grande scheme of things, in my opinion. You should feel gorgeous on your special day!!
  • Thank you everyone for making me feel better!  Everyone else thinks I am nuts, and my fiance isn't too happy about it either :(
  • A) I love your dress, but you need to LOVE your dress.

There is still time. I think beign such a light fabric and all in one color the flowers do lose their shape and just look like a bunch of material when not up close. If you want to try to salvage it, then maybe add some beading or sparkle to the "poof"? Something to give it more dimension, or texture rather than just the "light fluff" that looks bigger from afar?

It makes me think of the Justin Alexanger dress that I lovedmaybe take pictures of other dresses to the seamstress and see if she has ideas?

OR what about getting a 2nd dress?  Your formal portraits will likely be more close up, and you can even share your concern with your photographer and he see if they can keep you lit in the right manner to not create the big fluffy blur of fabric?  Then get a 2nd reception dress?

  • Unfortunately there are beads and sparkles in the top part already.  I don't think adding more beads or sparkles would do much :(
  • I personally think the dress is beautiful.  Ultimately, it is your decision.  As PP have said, you still have plenty of time.  I tried on about 10-15 dresses... and new the second one I tried on was "the one."  A week after I ordered it I started getting nervous that I didn't pick the right one, especially since I found it the first time dress shopping.  When it finally came in (a couple months early), I tried it on again and still loved it thank goodness!

Basically with all that nonsense I just wrote... it's your decision.  If you hate it, get a new one, there is time.
  • Well I went back to the bridal store tonight because I wanted to sleep good tonight lol!  I tried on my dress again, and ulitmately decided that I wouldn't want to wear it all day, and I want to go for a more romantic look and not a cute look.  I did try on a few different dresses and I think I figured out what different style I like, I want a more fitted look.  So I am going to another bride shop this weekend and going back to the same place I went tonight on monday.  We did find some better options my mom even said she liked some of the dresses better than the one I picked out.  This time I am not going to make a decision on a whim.  I just feel bad for spending 400 dollars on nothing :(  I guess I will get over it once I find my new dress!
  • Ok so for some reason every time I try to quote it takes me to WeddingChannel. WTF?

Anyway @Katiesue, good luck in your dress shopping. And as PPs said, you can always try to sell your first dress on the WC board or Craigslist.

  • I think you are making a good decision. If you are questioning it now, you don't want to feel that way on your wedding day. Even if after all of this, you decide to stick with your original dress, at least you can feel confident in that decision.

Try selling the original dress, if all else fails you could always donate it to an organization that will use it for a military family need (etc.) You can use that as a tax write off. I know that it's not exactly the same as getting the cash back, but still an option if all else fails!

Best of luck! I hope you find THE dress! :)
  • This time around, do a few checks to make sure it's the dress you really want:
    -Jump up and down
    -Touch your toes
-lean as far to one side as you can, then the other
    -Dance with your mom
-Take pictures that are up close (as close as aunt sally will be whie talking to you) and far away (like the last row during the ceremony)
-Bring at least 1 person with you who you know will be honost, preferably bring a couple!
-Print the pictures of all of your dresses, line them up and compare them
-Wait (even if it's on sale) places like Davids Bridal put dresses on sale all the time, the sales lady tried to pressure me into buying a dress that I loved the first time I went there, I said that I wanted to think about it, and her responce? "Oh, well I told you it was $350, but that's only the price until Friday, then it'll be $500" then as if they were listening in for the perfect moment, all of these sales ladies came walking up and complimenting my dress and asking me when I was going to buy it, and discussing the sale. I came really close to buying it, but I didn't. I'm glad that I didn't buy it them because it's been on sale almost every other week, and the one off the rack fits me, so why rush?

You mentioned that money wasn't an object for you. So how about buying some bridal magazines and cutting out all the pics of dresses that you like, then circling the areas of the dresses that you enjoy the most. Find a seamstress and have him/her go through all the photos, they should make a mock-up of the dress before they make the real thing, so you can see if you like the way the have combined all the dresses. You may be surprised at how cheap of an option this can be if you find the right seamstress. I was quoted at $300 plus materials by one who works out of her home.
  • I have a lump in my throat for spending 400 dollars on nothing, I feel pretty guilty about spending money but we have money, I am pretty frugal.  Which is probably why I bought the 400 dollar dress in the first place lol!  I hope to get over it once I find my new dress!  Thanks for the idea of writing it off as a tax write off if I can't sell it!!  Never thought of that!
  • Update: Went to try on more wedding dresses the past few days, three different stores to be exact, and I think I found a better one, but I am so nervous to pay for it, I know I will have to decide by the end of the year to get it here in time.  It is actually by the same designer mori lee!  I must like that designer!
