Make Up Poll

I don't wear a whole lot of makeup and just buy it from drug stores. So I'm trying to figure out the best makeup to use for the wedding. I don't want to use mineral makeup b/c it makes my skin look shiny in pictures.

I've called around and it's expensive to do trials. That's why I would like opinions before I spend $55 (MAC), $50 (Sephora), or 2 product minimum purchase (Bobbi Brown).

So what makeup do you ladies prefer?

Re: Make Up Poll

  • I use a lot of Mac makeup and the extra cost is 100% worth is. The quality of the makeup is so much better and I find I get less of the occasional zit when I use Mac (or brands of similar quality).

I think you'll feel more beautiful and your pictures will look better if you go for the splurge, and really - it's a pretty small amount compared to some of the other expenses in a wedding.

  • I am a Bobbi Brown loyalist. Love love love her stuff. Her powder/liquid eyeshadow and liner set is A-MA-ZING. Doesn't budge, if you use it as liner, blends beautifully for a more natural look.

I just recently started wearing make up. In the past I've had trouble finding foundation that looked right with my skin tone. L'Oreal's true match seems to work best for me so I use that now.  I use their liquid concealer and the powder that matches my foundation color/number.  For blush I use Covergirl (rose silk). It gives me just a hint of pink without being too much.  I've been playing around with my eyeshadows a lot.  I've got the CG set for blue eyes, the Almay shadowstick for blue eyes, Physicians Formula casual shimmer strips and Rimmel's Glam eyes English Oak.  The Rimmel is my favorite so far for regular wear so I plan to play with the included colors to figure out my wedding eye make up. I use the CG nature luxe mascara and gloss balm for lips.  Sometimes I use Nivea's kiss of shimmer for my lips instead.

Check out return policies for stores you're considering buying your make up from, and make sure that you can return make up you don't like. I work at CVS so I get my make up there.  Since I don't buy any make up unless its on sale my discount isn't a factor (we don't get our employee discount on sale items).  If you get any beauty stuff (not just make up) at CVS make sure you're in the beauty club.  You get $5 Extra bucks for every $50 you spend.  If you buy something and end up returning it you don't lose anything toward the reward.  I've gotten my beauty reward 3 times already this year.  If you check the ads in the sunday papers there is almost always coupons for make up and the P&G brand saver comes out the first sunday of the month.  If you can help it, don't buy anything full price, use a coupon and if possible combine it with a sale. Then just keep your reciepts until you know you like the products enough to keep them.

  • I also use a lot of MAC makeup and I have to agree that the quality of the makeup is awesome!  I've also invested in several of their brushes and can totally tell the difference between those and ones from the drug stores.

I also say to invest the money and get qood quality makeup.  The thing I like about Sephora is that they will give you samples of the products so you may not have to purchase certain things, like concealer or foundation, that you won't use after your wedding day.  They also carry a variety of products so you don't just have to go with a certain brand.  One of my favorite products is Urban Decay Primer Potion for the eyes.  I love that stuff and highly recommend it.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you go between Monday and Thursday, MAC will do makeup applications for free.  They only make you purchase products on the weekends.  So, if I were you, I would go in there during the week and just have them show you different products and go back as many times as you need.

When I went into Sephora, they didn't make me purchase anything either, and I went during the week, so maybe they operate the same way.

Go on the Wedding Beauty board and I think there is a sticky where people have posted their favorite products and there was one poster that is a makeup artist/esthetician that wrote up a long review on several different products that was extremely helpful.

    Good luck!

  • Have you tried Mary Kay? It's always free to try their stuff with a consultant...it's no hassle to return makeup. I know because I'm a consultant on the side. Not trying to sell here or advertise my own business. Just saying that I love the stuff. I like the quality and with the right consultant, it's not expensive. Look for one in your area. I've been using their foundation for 6 years...we carry many options besides mineral. We have eye primer and foundation primer that helps makeup apply more smoothly and stay on all day and night.

I'm thinking of just doing my own and i've had many compliments. Even my FMIL thinks I should do my own makeup...but i'm not sure yet. I kind of also want to be pampered by someone else :P

  • I'm a Clinique fan.  I have sensitive skin and have never had an issue with their stuff (with the exception of step 2 of their 3 step skin care...that did not get along with my skin).  I'm very picky about what I use on my face because of my sensitive skin.

The salon that I'm using for my wedding hair and makeup uses Bare Essentials and MAC makeup.  I had my trial and I loved the products that she used on me.

Could not agree more. I don't wear eyeshado without my primer potion. It's amazing and keeps your eyeshadow from developing those crease lines.

  • I'm a Clinique girl myself. That being said, my MUA is only $30 including my trial so I am letting her do the work. She's new to the public business but is highly  recommended by several of the photographers in the area. I'll spend my money with her rather than buy all new makeup as all my makeup has SPF in it.

  • MAC trials are free at macys with no obligation to buy do you have a macys close by?
  • I do have a Macy's. I called them about Bobbi Brown. I didn't realize they had a MAC counter too.

Everyone I've talked to is requiring me to pay something/buy something.

I'm leaning towards Sephora b/c of the selection. I've heard a lot of ppl talk about the Urban Decay (?) primer and eye makeup and the Makeup For Ever HD (?) for the face (I think that's what they're called lol).

I don't really have any "good" makeup. Just cheap drug store stuff which is good enough for me for day to day, but it wouldn't hurt to have some good stuff for more special occasions.

    Thanks everyone!!

  • I would try Benefit makeup - used this for my engagement pictures and it just gave me a real natural, glowing look!
