Haha, I saw that! I wonder how many brides over there are freaking out now. How would you like to be having a lot of OOT guests and suddenly they can't find a reasonably priced hotel for miles and miles and miles!

Honestly what would it matter is a bride was getting married on April 29th.  The Royal Wedding in the UK has nothing to do with the average bride's wedding in the U.S.

They are getting married on a Friday so it won't impact as many people as it would if it were on a Saturday. I remember when Princess Diana was married, the number of people that called in sick or took vacatin days from work was amazing.  We may be in the US but people watched that all over the world

It's interesting, yesterday on another board, they were talking about the possibility of they Royal wedding being in March and on the same day as other brides on the board. I mentioned that my FI and I are getting married on a Friday so I doubt they will be marrying on a Friday. Ha! I eat my words!

    >>Honestly what would it matter is a bride was getting married on April 29th.  The Royal Wedding in the UK has nothing to do with the average bride's wedding in the U.S.

Well, if a U.S. bride is getting married on that same day - Friday, April 29, many of your guests will have been up since 4:00 a.m. watching this world event, and will be pretty tired by the time your wedding and reception roll around in the evening.  And at least some of the talk will be about the royal wedding, when most brides would not appreciate chatter about world events more interesting than the wedding they are attending.

If a U.S. bride is getting married the following day - Saturday, April 30, many of your guests will have gotten up on the day before at 4:00 a.m. to watch the world event, and at your rehearsal dinner that night, they will be pretty tired out and certainly talking about the royal wedding they watched earlier in the day.  Then at your wedding reception, people might include in their talk topics how your wedding stacks up with the royal wedding the day before.  Most brides would not appreciate that comparison.

I don't care either.  I'm sure a glance at the magazine stand at my grocery store will show me all the best pictures, and if anything really entertaining happens with either the wedding or the coverage around it, it will show up on The Soup, InfoMania, or my FB news feed.  Getting up at 4am to watch the wedding of people I'll never meet?  Please.

Clearly you didn't grow up with your mother getting you up to see lunar eclipses, and comets, and shooting stars, and shuttle blastoffs, and you didn't have TVs in school to show you the live broadcasts of real international events that occurred during the school day, and you didn't have courses in college that addressed current events that you needed to see and learn...  If you are only interested in your own friends and your own home town here in the United States, how can you understand the rest of the world who think that all Americans are Americentric and not interested in anything outside of the U.S.

My mom got my brother and me up in the middle of the night to watch meteor showers, etc.  That doesn't mean I care about the royal wedding.  I would probably watch it if it was on the weekend or at a time on a weekday when I'd normally be up, but I definitely will not be getting up at 4 a.m. to watch it.

I think it's great that some people are looking forward to watching it, and I'm sure I'd like watching it, but not at 4 a.m.

These things are not comparable to eachother.  First of all I would hope my mom wouldn't wake me up to see a shooting star, since by the time she woke me up I would have missed it.  Second of all, those things are scientific events, and help drive in the points taught in school.  The royal wedding is nothing more than a celebrity wedding, and the fact that I couldn't care less about watching their wedding doesn't make me Americentric.  If the our own President wan't married when he entered office I can pretty much guarantee I wouldn't watch his wedding either.

The huge focus on the Brits in general certainly betrays a lot of Anglocentrism, though.  The princess of Sweden was married this summer, and the prince of Jodhpur was married just last week, both extravagant affairs, but apparently our culture only really cares about a royal wedding if they're white and speak English.

What? People don't take naps? Seriously though, who the hell cares if people are talking about the royal wedding at your own wedding? I can't dictate what my guests talk about at a dinner party, let alone a wedding. Would you have your DJ make an announcement banning all talk about the royal wedding? If my guests wanted to get up at 4am to watch the wedding, so be it, but they're all adults. If they were going to be tired they could just nap in the middle of the day.

As to your thoughts on how Aerin clearly doesn't care about current events. That's the dumbest comparison I've ever heard. Meteor showers have no comparison to say, the president getting assassinated. Would I watch covereage if something like that happened? Most definitely, it affects this country (and quite possibly world dynamics), but two royals getting married (ie: a celebrity wedding) does not affect me. Isn't the Monarchy dying anyway?

It is because I read British newspapers rather religiously (for an outside perspective on America) that I am not interested in the royal wedding, either.  Kate ..err.. Catherine isn't well loved over there, despite what they will have you believe right now.

I'm happy for William.  She's just eh to me.  I don't care to watch her spayshul day.

EDIT: I should have said "their spayshul day."  My bad.  Although, as tldh pointed out, it really is all about the princess here according to the media :-).

Shuttle blast-offs, lunar eclipses, government coups, the events of 9/11 cannot begin to compare to a celebrity wedding.  I would watch the first 4 that I mentioned.  A wedding between two people that I don't know and could not possibly care less about?

What will I be doing on April 29?  Helping my adorable and well-loved DIL celebrate her birthday.  Now that's important.

I didn't get up at 4 am on my own wedding day.  I didn't get up at 4 am on my own DD's wedding day.  I didn't get up at 4 am on my son's wedding day.  Why in heaven's name would I get up before dawn on the wedding day of two complete strangers?

I didn't get up at 4am for my own wedding. I most certainly will not be getting up at 4am for Will and Kate. There's nothing wrong with just catching the highlights over the weekend on the celebrity gossip shows.

I care about world events that actually matter-earthquakes, terrorist attacks, declarations of war, curing cancer. To say one doesn't care about worldly matters because they don't care about this wedding is just plain ignorant.

This is a celebrity wedding-a really, really, really fancy and elaborate celebrity wedding. I can understand a bride in England (Especially in the London area) wanting to schedule her own wedding to avoid conflicting with the royal wedding because of travel and lodging difficulties. But I really don't think somebody getting married in say, America or Canada should really have to reconsider their date choices on the assumption that "most" of their guests will be up at 4am watching. I'm going to guess that "most" of their guests have TiVo, or are adults that are 100% responsible for their own sleep choices-if they choose to get up that early on your wedding day, it's on them, not you.

I admit that I'm interested, but I've always been interested in the Royal Family. I know they're pretty useless politically now, but back in the day they had a huge impact on world events. Now, they're pretty much just the face of the country for the rest of the world's amusement, but their history is fascinating.

Who ever marries Prince William, in this case Kate, will be joining the ranks of Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn... both women with huge influences on not only their countries, but the world. Princess Diana, who didn't even make it to queen, was an incredible inspiration to me.
I'm not saying Kate will have an impact on anything, just that she is the most recent spouse of a future king in a line of people I have always been interested in. Just a personal preference. :)

I admit I had no idea about who the Queen of Sweden is or that they even had a royal family, but I never thought about the fact that I personally was ever effected by the Swedish royal family. The British royal family, I have, although, perhaps not directly.

I don't get how ANY of this relates to a celebrity wedding, which is all it really is. I will admit I might watch some of it, but I work and doubt I would watch the whole DVR, so most likely I will read US Weekly the next week for pics. I have no problem with people who do get into it, but saying that someone who doesn't care about a celeb wedding is not up on current events essentially is asinine. Those two do not relate at all.
