October 2012 Weddings

Outdoor ceremonies?! Yikes.

Hi ladies.

Just looking for some feedback here.  Who of you are having an outdoor ceremony?  I am especially interested if you live in the North East.  My wedding is 10/27 in Rhinebeck, NY.  My original indoor ceremony venue fell though and I am thinking of doing a short outdoor ceremony on the Hudson.  But October weather in NY is toally unpredictable.  Do you think I'm crazy?  I do have a backup plan, to do it inside my reception venue so I won't be totally freaking out if there's torrential ran- or even snow!

Let me know what you think.  Thanks!

  • If that is what your heart is set on, I would do it as long as you have a back up.  I live in about 20 minutes from Rhinebeck and you are right, the weather can be a little unpredictable here in October.

  • I am also having an outdoor wedding. I live in Orlando FL. It's usually really unpredictable here as well. Last year it rained on the day I would be getting married. I've been worried but I just pray about it and will leave it in Gods hands. Good luck!

  • I live in Maryland and am having an outdoor ceremony (but with a backup). The weather could be 45 degrees or 80 degrees in October. As long as you have a backup plan I think it's perfectly fine to plan for an outside ceremony.  :)

  • I'm in Albany, NY and planning an outdoor (albeit tented) ceremony for 10/6/12. Our alternative in case of weather will be to move the ceremony into the reception room. I think it would be crazy to do an outdoor ceremony with no backup plan, but you have one so it shouldn't be an issue. :)

  • I'm having an outdoor ceremony and i live in ontario canada. It will be a short ceremony so people sholdn't be too cold and i put a "dress warmly" message on the RSVP card. the only think that will stop my outdoor ceremony will be rain

  • I'll be getting married outside of Albany on the 6th, and our ceremony's outside. If the weather's bad, we'll move in to the reception space. It'll be a pain, though, as it's a barn and the bathrooms aren't attached, so I'm crossing every possible finger and toe now that the 6th is okay...

  • I have the same date, and I am doing an outdoor ceremony. Im in baltimore so we have some chilly weather in October. Im worried it might be too cold and everyone keeps telling me that it will be. If bad weather does happen we will be moving it indoors.
But I always wanted an outdoor ceremony, so I guess everyone will just have to tough out the cold for 15 mins...
As long as you have a back up plan you should be covered. They should know its outdoor ceremony so the guest should plan accordingly.

  • I live in CT and am having an outdoor ceremony.. but my date is 10/6/12.. so I'm crossing my fingers it will be in the 60's or so. But being in the North East you're right it's unpredictable! A plan B is so important!

  • It's unpredictable in central Texas too in October.  Last year, it was beautiful weather on our wedding date.  But the year before that, it was freezing!  Even though ours ceremony is outodoor, we have a back up plan and we are hoping for the best.  As long as you have a "Plan B", I say go for it!

  • Thanks all! Seems the general consensus is do it but have a plan b!
  • Our wedding will be in the north, north part of NJ-- our date is the 13th and we are planning for an outdoor ceremony (but there is a space inside we can use if there is imclimate weather). I would go for it!

  • Outdoor in PA but we have a backup too.  So I say you are fine.

Last year I was in a wedding Oct 1st and it was cold, then the Oct before that I got sunburnt watching a football game... so unpredictable!

  • I am also planning on an outdoor ceremony in the Hudson Valley, NY for the beginning of October.  Both ceremony and reception are at the same place so plan B the ceremony is moved to indoors.  Fingers crossed for good weather :-)

  • I'm having an outdoor ceremony in northern VA.  In October it can be beautiful, or it can be torrential rain from a hurricane.  We have our reception room as a backup.  I would really recommend discussing this with your venue and getting an approximate timeline in the event of rain or cold.  The place we chose is able to set up the ceremony inside with only a 1/2 hour delay, but one of the other places we looked at kept saying 2 hours to set up the ceremony!  I don't have any problem starting the wedding 30 min late if we have to, but I feel like it's really rude to make the guests sit around for 2 hours while the venue is setting up the room.

  • We are having an outdoor backyard reception on October 20, in Denver Colorado.  We get snow as early as September sometimes but I looked up past records for that date and also checked the Farmer's Almanacs, lol!  I was really worried about it for a while since everyone kept saying, what about SNOW so I finally just did the backup plan.  I feel better now and quit stressing.
I think no matter where your outdoor ceremony is, if you have a back up plan there is no need to worry.  I've seen enough episodes of Four Weddings and David Tutera that even rained on/hurricanes/etc on outdoor ceremonies didn't ruin the beautiful day. :)
